I wasn't the one judging a player on the performance of his club... you were.

What I'm saying is that Wolves have been poor, but Jarvis hasn't exactly stood out as a good player among mediocre players, like, for example, Ba at West Ham, Adam at Blackpool, Gardner at Birmingham. On the contrary, he has been part of the problem - one of too many players not performing well enough. He has not shown this season that he is a Premier League-standard player. Though, I will admit, he has in previous seasons.

I wasn't judging him based on the performance of his club. At all. As an individual he has not been good enough this season.

Exactly! Joe, on this one it is true that it was defensive issues. They have a reasonable midfield and Jarvis is a good winger.

Just because they have gone down is irrelevant.

I agree that defense has been their main problem, but I think that their midfielders have let them down considering that they have previously proven to be quite good. Jarvis, Milijas and O'Hara were so good last season, but they just haven't performed this time around.

He's still a good player. He'll excel under Adkins who extracts every ounce of ability from most of the players he works with.

Yeah who knows, maybe poor management was the problem. He's clearly got the ability in him.

The main reason why Wolves were relegated is that they were shocking defensively. Jarvis is a good player and would be very pleased to see him at Saints.

Absolutely, and I don't think that it's a mark against him that he has looked quite dangerous on a team where he hasn't had a tonne of support. He can play on both wings, has excellent touch and decision-making in the build-up, and has an eye for goal. I'd be delighted to pair him with Lallana wide, or play him on the left with Lallana moving into a more central role.

I think it's fair to blame the management - every single man on their team has been poor, some of whom (Jarvis included) are very talented. Also Terry Connor is possibly the worst manager ever.

Matt Jarvis would be a good buy - our current options on the right wing are poor; De Ridder appears not to have what it takes for the Champoinship, never mind Premiership and I do not see Chappers, Puncheon nor Guly in that position next season either. He's got the experience and is a good age.

We also need a goal scoring midfielder - I see Swansea has failed, so far, to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson; would love someone with his abilities in our side next season; big, strong, good work-rate and scores goals - I have no idea who would make way for him; but he can do the job.

Defensively; we need two centre backs; one has to be left footed. I see at Norwich that Zak Whitbread out of contract this summer; a possibility perhaps...

In League 1, we were top dog and players at that level fell over themselves to join us. In the Championship, we were a big club and could attract Championship players. In the PL, we are back to not only being little old Southampton, but being newly promoted little old Southampton. Like it or not, many players would rather go to WHU/Birmingham if promoted than to us. We will have to be the only game in town or outbid other clubs. We know what we're about, but we are below the radar for most players.

P.s. should add before you all top yourselves that there are lots of players out there!

Frans right.....until we have been back in the premier for a few seasons we are not going to attract decent names. When you look at the odds of newly promoted teams going straight back down you can understand players being a bit wary in going to those teams. Unless of course you are a player from a lower division looking to improve. Or maybe someone who has only just started playing at that level and has yet to establish a premier reputation. I guess what I am saying is to saints fans not to expect Messi type signings.............

Just wait until they have spent five minutes with Nicola and they will be aching to sign on the dotted line.

Just think thay will be playing football with Lallana, Guly, Morgan and Ricky if they do.

Who could ask for better than that?

We should prepare for a few disappointments but also regard it as a weeding out of players who don't deserve a ticket on our bus/boat/plane/rocket. I do expect 1 or 2 players from abroad who want the challenge of playing in the PL and hope that this year a few youngsters get the chance to step up.

So what was QPR's excuse then in signing players such as Zamora, SWP etc.......

Surely they are seen as a smaller club than the likes of saints.....

Agreed they prob spent a fortune on wages etc.. but players will buy into projects. Fonte dropped a division to sign for us and we were nowwhere near the top of the table at that point when he could have prob joined a lower end prem club.

Have a bit more faith in us.

Spot on Fran!
That's why we need to looking at attracting the best of the Championship players to come to SMS and not looking at any lesser premiership players - they will want to join little old Southampton to give them a chance of playing premeirship football and want to proove themselves worthy of a place in the team

Fran, you may be surprised. To back up Godders comments above, they will be impressed by Cortese and his "presentation". Apparently Lee was signing before he even visited the club himself. His advisors travelled to meet several good European sides and were so impressed with the Cortese approach that they told Tadanari that Southampton was the team for him.

I do believe that there is an element of truth if you are talking about the top table players, but a player being presented to by Cortese up against Sullivan/Gold/Brady and bunch.... no comparsion. Only one winner.

You are thinking about tiny old Saints at the Dell or early days at SMS with Lowe in charge. This is a company run by an awe inspiring Chairman, filled with ambition. Enthusiasm and energy is infectious.... just wait and see.

Maybe the best of the Championship, but why not some good Premiership players? Why not some good European players? If we think small club mentality, we'll perform with small club mentality.

I think like others, championship players of quality with something to prove will be the most likely signings. But.....I also wouldn't be totally surprised if we made a biggish signing to really wet the appetite! I'm pretty sure that there are good football people that have noticed what we have done, and Swansea and Norwich have done us no harm regards proving the fact that you can come up, play football and not break the bank. We'll see I guess.
