No they go straight to group stage regardless of where they finish
 
No King, they won't, holders do not need to qualify, they assume an automatic spot from the country they are in, thats why the PL is cut to 3 league places, with 3rd place having the extra qualifying round. <ok>

The rule was created because of liverpool

Yes they have HD...this is the new rule, the problem only cropped when winners Liverpool fell out the qualifying places in 5th, (unusual for a CL winner to not be at the top end of its league). it meant 5 English teams the following year (if you're wondering who the other one was apart from the usual suspects....Everton!), and UEFA weren't having any repeat of that! <ok>
 
Yes, I knew they didn't want 5 teams again, but wasn't aware that the "Champions" would avoid qualifiers if they finished outside the top 3.
