Having a little bit of a "thicky Holden" moment, and trying to get my head round matters. Currenlty, we are on a knife's edge in terms of having the chance to win the FA Cup and/or the Champions League as well as finish in 4th place.

On the glass half (completely) empty angle, we could finish 6th and be runners up in both FA Cup & Champions League. If the "oh, so negative" approach happens, does that mean that we completely miss out on Europe next year OR, as it will mean the mickey mousers win the FA Cup (having already won the other one), that as runners up we get into the Europa?

I'm all over the place. We could potentially have one of our greatest ever seasons, or our worst since Roman arrived (if we don't get to play in Europe next year).

Somebody help!!!

I would say "call me a Doctor", but I'm guessing Drogs or Blue Moon or 5W6 will say "you're a Doctor". Whatever the situation, I'm going to need some very heavy medication over the next few weeks (basically either Peroni or Stella)

As I understand it 5th always gets a Europa place and the winners of the cups do. However if Liverpool (god forbid) win the fa cup too, the Europa place will go to the 6th placed team i.e assuring us, newcastle, spuds and arsenal european football whatever the result on saturday.

So on that basis we could also...

Win or lose on Saturday, nick 4th and pass the Europa place onto the "next best placed team"

Win or lose and finish 6th and win the CL and do the same?

<whistle>

Phew, that's 1 less thing to worry about. Now, just got to beat Newcastle tonight. I'm expecting them to lose to City (closing in on the EPL), so that would sort 5th out.

There is some potential humour to be had with SPurs maybe finishing 4th, then a week later we win the Champions League to push them out of it next Season. Would be funny, but would love to make 4th spot ours

I do audit & risk management for a living, but it looks like there are far to many permutations and combinations to list out. I think the best way to settle matters is for us to win every game we have left and Spurs draw tonight. Then we have 4th, Champions League and FA Cup. I think I could live with that!

Oooft, sounds belting<ok>

Croc--for a start all TRUE Blues will be a bag of nerves over the next fortnight--so join the club! The medicine that keeps me going , is the knowledge that Robbie goes out to win EVERY game--plus a few glasses of good red wine! Keep the faith and KTBFFH! <ok>

We can't guarantee winning the C.L obviously but if we could, I'd happily have Spurs finish 4th so we could then take the place off them the following week.

I call this 'the dream scenario'!!

We are in the Europa League no matter what happens as we are now guaranteed a top 6 finish.

The three guaranteed positions for Europa League football in England are:

FA Cup Champions
League Cup Champions
5th in the League

As Liverpool have already won the League Cup and are into the FA Cup final, then 6th place takes the other Europa League spot.

Right, Peroni on ice, Tyrrells sweet chilli & red pepper ready for devouring along with a slice or two of Parma Ham in a sea salt and black pepper french stick. I fancy us for a 3-1 win tonight. One step at a time......sweet Jesus

As Liverpool had already won the Carling Cup (and thus qualified for Europa) we automatically qualified the moment we beat the spuds in FA cup semi.

My evening's refreshments sorted!!

Europa league will go to 5th and 6th this year

There are potentially 3 Europa League spots, 5,6,7th.

If a team lower than 7th wins the Carling Cup, they get the Europa spot instead of whoever is 7th.

If a team lower than 7th reaches the final of the FA cup, they get the Europa spot instead of whoever is in 7th, unless the team that wins it is also lower than 7th.

Or if both of the above happen, those two will get Europa League spots, and not the teams in 6th and 7th, and only 5th with get Europa League.

So this year, 7th place will not get you Europa League, only 5th and 6th, as Liverpool won the Carling Cup, and even though they've reached the FA Cup final, they've already got a Europa spot, so 6th place is still Europa League qaulification.

Anyways, right now anywhere in the top 6 is Europa League or CL Guaranteed. <ok>

In the case of the Carling Cup if the winner has a place already in either 5th or CL places it will go to 6th place, but in the case of the FA Cup, if the winner already has a place then the runner up gets a place not the next league position.

I dont think it makes the slightest bit of difference anyway this year.
