The very lovely Mrs Godders returned home from shopping with a copy of the Daily Echo yesterday, a paper we stopped buying twenty years ago when it really went downhill. She thought I might like to read it as it had lots of information and stories about our promotion. Well all I can say is that this paper is still absolute crap. In one section it gave ratings for the players and of the 12 players who played the biggest part on Saturday eight were rated higher than Guly. That newspaper is now fulfilling its only useful purpose at the bottom of the cat's litter tray.
Talking of the press in general, there was a great photo and write up about Saints in the Guardian's sport section yesterday. But it didn't really make up for their failure to recognise our existence for the last 3 years. At least the Echo gives a stuff about Saints, although I suppose they have to.
You could be right. I was talking to someone who saw the game on TV and they were surprised when I said he was one of our best players.
COme on guys he was alright but he didn't set the world alight. And also as someone else has said its only someones opinion. And you say that 8 where rated higher, but by how many points 1? 2? not many though. Its not as if they gave him a 5.
I read the Sun at work yesterday and they only gave Guly a 6,that proves to me they know nothing about the game.....
Watch the whole match again then. He's the busiest player on the pitch. Right to the end he was challenging and would not let the opposition settle.
Guly had a great game...got in for important tackles, assist for Lallana/Sharp goal, kept the ball....a player we will need next season. Must also praise the team for being able to keep the ball in play. Many times this season the ball has looked like it's going out of play, when suddenly you realise it is pin point accurate and our players bring it down, turn and play. A lot of work must go on at the training ground to improve ball control and enable us to play with confidence and use the whole pitch.
Good spot, Fran. I find it quite unnerving. I'm used to Saints players failing to control a 5 yard pass! As for Guly, once Hammond went off and Cork went right he just seemed to boss things with Morgan (who is a genius). Have we actually got the midfield right?
Fonte and himself were our best players. I know you don't rate Guly at all but I thought he looked back to his confident best. His tee up for Lallana and the first goal was exquisite. Plus his work rate was incredible and some people think he is lazy!
I believe sometime ago Opta showed that Guly is one of our most hardworking players...he can't help having that loping action. Sadly, short people charging round the pitch always look more up for it.
If they didn't the newspaper would go bust. Their sales only go up when reporting on Saints, not out of the quality of the reports, but some still seem to think its telling them something they don't already know or pictures they've not seen. In reality, you get almost Zero information from the Echo that you've not read/heard/seen already on the official site or sky or national papers. The photographs are pretty poor compared to the excellent ones on the OS too. The Echo pics mostly consisted of gurning kids & parents because the paper is desperate for them to buy a print of that pic. I only picked up a copy of Monday's as it was laying around at work. Not paid for a copy for years and considering the amount of saints stuff to write about this weekend, thought it was a poor "special supplement" compared to the ones I've still got from the "good old days of the Echo" in the 70's & 80's.
Guly and Fonte were the stand out players. Giving 3 players higher marks would be a disgrace let alone 8, what a garbage newspaper
I think that the Echo and the Saints should try to get along a little better. Arguably, Saints don't need the Echo but I think both would benefit from a better relationship.
Well come on fellas a little bird told me they had a picture in the middle of a handsome young man (and hi little boy) in the middle pages
Getting youself firmly in the media spotlight lately FLT! You'll be replacing Jeff Stelling soon enough
