You'd like to think it would be the same scenario as Chelsea winning the FA Cup and finishing in a European spot (as in it opens another spot in the league).

Alas no.

I ask coz the winners get a spot and the top 4 get a spot.

I know usually the winners of the CL finish in a qualifying position anyway but where does the extra place go?

Chelsea finish 4th and win the Champions League?

I started a post on this at the same time! (Great minds etc...)

My post answers you: -
Although Arsenal are not sure to retain 3rd place in the league, the real battle is on 4th spot, even though normally, that only guarantees a two match knockout to enter the group stage of the Champions League.
This year, however, there is a twist, since if Chelsea beat Bayern Munich, only 3 other teams from the Premiership will enter the Champions League next season.

So, 3rd place is a definite plus, whilst 4th place is a maybe!

There is no extra space - they assume that the winners are good enough to finish in a CL place in the league by the looks of it <laugh>

Doing so much to dispel the opinion that the Champions League is a closed shop in the process.

It would be interesting if a team who had to go through the qualifiers due to their co-efficient being weaker (i.e. Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St Petersburg, Celtic et al) somehow won it, as that would really balls up UEFA's planning.

When Liverpool won it, they started right at the beginning of qualification, although this was because we had 5 teams in that year. If Chelsea qualify by winning it but are outside top 4, I will be slightly consoled by seeing them play in Poland in July.
