I think that people are focusing a little too much on what our 'best' system and first XI is supposed to be. The truth is that until Terry's racist rant and Crapello's ludicrous wobbly, it didn't really matter what team we put out. We were winning a hell of a lot and not losing much. Redknapp clearly lost all concentration during his court case, somewhat understandably and then had his head turned when the England vacancy opened up. Combine that with his almost complete lack of rotation early on in the season, a fairly suicidal January transfer window and some diabolical officialdom and we've ended up where we are now.
Most teams don't play with two wingers for a far more practical reason. They don't HAVE two wingers. Things fell apart yesterday when we went 4-4-2. We need to decide what our best formation (IMO we have) and stick to it. That way we might actually get used to overcoming setbacks feeling comforable and knowing what our jobs are. The main problem with Norwich and yesterday was what was between the players' ears. We started slow, and our defence played like strangers.
Fair comments PNP, and I make you right. There are so many complicating factors. It's strange how something like Terry's 'outburst' far from damaging Chelsea has helped them. Life is strange, etc, However, so many Spurs fans tell me that it's obvious our best system and best XI involves Lennon and Bale out wide. That's what this thread is specifically about, but for sure whether we play two wingers or 2 DMs, cruel fate can overturn one's plans.
Yes, but WHY don't they have two wingers? Because they don't want them, because most top teams don't play with two wingers, so why recruit redundant players? That's what was wrong in my view when so many were calling for a back up to Bale and Lennon as our priority signing. Bale is Lennon's back up and vice-versa. What we needed was, for example, another CB since it's now clear Harry doesn't rate Nelsen above two 'past their best CBs'. Or another RB or LB, as Walker and Ekotto play far too many games. I'm no big fan of BAE, and Walker still has major flaws to his game. Also, I don't think having Lennon on the wing is a great help to Walker. Or we could have got another goalscoring mid in, so we could play two DMs, and not rely too much on Parker and Modric.
