I've always admired Martin O'Neill's Football(ing) management style (from a distance). He appears to be one of those managers that players like to play for., I think the right term would be 'Good man manager and motivator'; much like our very own Harry.

His (O'Neill) style of play isn't all bad these days and he is very much respected by the so called professional pundits and press.
He is a good tactician and he has an excullent eye for the 'finer' points of the modern game, as played in the Premiership.

Now, at the resk of being called niave, (as i have been called on this board, once already, this year ),. which incidently, seemed a bit hash at the time... I have been an avidly Spurs man for the best part of 30+ yrs., and I'm not wanting to digress any further (forgive my rant). So, do you think he (O'Neill) is Spurs material ?.

I know the ink on his contract at Sunderland has barely dried and that the buy-out clause may prohibit a move, just yet, but your thoughts pls.

I could think of worse ideas. Like hiring some outrageously overpriced foreigner, who can't speak two words of English, and knows **** all about Premiership football. I respect, O'Neill. He gets the best from what he has to work with. I think he gets results from organising a team, and the way it plays, rather than man- management skills. Not sure he's right for us, though.

I think he always starts well and that players seem to like his approach, but has he really ever cracked it in the medium term with anyone but Celtic? (who could save lots of grief every year by just tossing a coin with Rangers.) To be fair, he would be above Rodgers in my estimation, but are either really suited to Spurs? O'Neil is a pretty downbeat character after all.

He'd be a fair way down my list and I think he'd cost a lot in compensation given he's only just signed for Sunderland.

  5. Not for me.
Another manager who seems to thrive in adversity, when resources are stretched.
You have to wonder why he has never managed a 'big' club after so many years in the game. Suggests that others better placed than us don't think he's up to the task.

  6. I'd be disappointed if we ended up with MON.

at least he is not a tax avoiding twat, oh and what has Harry exactly ever won as a manager or a player? - one fa cup which actually bankrupted the club in doing so.

Can't believe a Blunderland fan is so upset that we don't want his manager because he has guided them to the top 10 lol.

Probably just upset coz Newcastle came back up and are immediately better than them <laugh>

I find your comment quite offensive. In case you hadn't realised, the man was cleared unanimously by a jury of all allegations.

O'Neill's a good manager, but I'm not a fan of his style of football.
He seems to value graft and grit above everything.
They're necessary parts of any team, but his tend to have them ahead of any other qualities and he favours the long ball more than I'd like, too.

He'll do well at Sunderland and make them hard to beat, so I'm sure they'll like him a lot.
Not for me at Spurs, though.

The reality is no one can tell who would do a good job at Spurs. You can speculate all your like, look at records and cv's but in the end whoever get's the job after Harry may or may not succeed. We can look at safe pairs of hands and MON would be one of those, but when have we ever wanted the 'safe' option at Spurs? There is no guarantee of success for anyone and that includes top rated managers like Mourinho.

The history of football is littered with big name managers failing at big clubs. Probably the only club to achieve success with a line of managers was Liverpool following Shankly with Paisley, ***an and Dalglish and then they had Souness! who IMHO was the beginning of the rot from which they have never recovered. The gap between Busby and Ferguson was nearly seventeen years and by their standards that seventeen years was not successful.

In other words the hardest decision for Levy is always who do you replace the present manager with. No wonder he will fight tooth and nail to keep Harry.
