I have been reading numerous threads since last Tuesday's results and everyone thinks we're up already! Please, don't jinx us. Whilst I am confident, remember it was only last tuesday that the chain of results resulted in our slight break away. It can easily go the other way if for example West Ham win tonight and saturday and we lose against Blackpool and draw against pompey.... As Nigel says, one game at a time.... I know this view is unpopular, but please let's not end up with egg on our face... slate away!!
Agreed. There will be a time a game or two before mathematical certainty where we can really start getting excited!
When I'm just mucking around, I will play along with jinxes and myths. Truthfully though, it's twaddle. If we're good enough, we'll get there. Pompey 2-0 against Hull City.
True, i suppose. you don't get promoted over the last 7 games - the previous 39 must be taken into account It's just I had lunch with my brother today and went from we'll be promoted at the Reading game, to we'll need to beat Coventry to stand a chance depending on other results!!! I love and hate this. I cannot concentrate at work and all I want to talk about to my football hating wife is about the Saints!!! Even my dogs (see avatar) are Saints fans; the other day we couldn't find the girl dog (beige one) and I started singing the Rickie Lambert song and she game running down and danced on her hind legs!!!!! I just want April to be over so I can enjoy the summer!!! I go to bed imagining first the Coventry game with us being promoted and then the pain of losing to pompey, and losing the playoffs and playing pompey again next year............. I suppose one thing I have learnt as a Saints fan is that we will never do it the easy way.............
Yea i think we need to take a step back, if reading win and we lose on saturday, could happen as Blackpool are good team, then we are only two points ahead. So yea we are in a great position but lets take it a game at a time
You know what? I'm going to get completely carried away. We're already up. This time next season we'll be in the Premier League top 6, and will be rumoured with signing Eden Hazard and Iker Muniain. In 2015, we will win the Premier League and the Champions League beating Barcelona 6-0 at their own ground in the final. Will these over-optimistic predictions cause complacency within the team or "jinx" their results? No. Why? Because I'm just one fan and my opinions don't make a difference. (And there's no such thing as "jinxing" or any other superstitious bullshit). So if you don't mind, I'll get as carried away as I damn well please.
Not being negative - I am always positive about us during games - I still thought we could get something from Brighton at 3-0 down! Just been a fan too long. I know if I want it to happen, it normally doesn't. Though this is the 'New Southampton' and I should be more confident I suppose....
What I'm pondering a lot recently is: what if we lose to Pompey? Derby games see form fly out the window, and for some reason, Pompey - running on fumes, as they are - are raising their games against the promotion contenders - spanking Brimingham, and 2 up against Hull tonight! I know SMS is a different matter, but they know this could define their season - they go down, but at least beat Saints in probably the last ever game they play in their current guise! If they go under, and become a fan-owned club or whatever, not only can we not have a proper rivalry (that's just bullying), but also they will be able to say they had the last word!
Ok, my blip of confidence is over. We are the new Southampton. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Remember we are Southampton, we're top of the league! Positive enough?!
If we were mid-table then the Derby game would be more important, but to me, it's now just one of the opportunities which we have to get the points we need. Of course if we were to fail to get those points, then they would never let us forget it. Where I have to agree with Joe, is that I think that we should fight against the superstitious nonsense at every opportunity. I think that every child ought to be forced to have a proper grounding in statistics so that all that rubbish is finally laid to rest.
Upto date readers will realise that I completely cocked that up. It was West Ham who had scored. Never mind, my point stands. Enjoy the moment. Don't ruin it by worrying about the future.
FFS! It is the MANAGERS job to keep people´s feet on the ground, focus on one game at a time, come out with all the typical clichés...etc ....and as we know Adkins is the best at that. However, us, as fans, have ever right to get excited and carried away. Why do we have to be boring sods and not get excited by thinking about playing in the premier league!?..Let Adkins do the job of being pessimist and not getting carried away...and let the fans think, believe and dream what the bloody hell we want as that is what it is all about. So, I´m optimistic, dreaming about the premier league and believing we are going to win this division! COYR!!!
We've avoided relegation mathematically, so let's just sit back and enjoy. I certainly don't want the team to be catapulted into the EPL circus, where survival depends on money and little else. I think Nigel will do the canny thing in the next few games and leave us in seventh or eighth place. You know it makes sense.
One game at a time. At this exact moment in time however, we cannot finish lower than 10th. Five more points will see a pray-off place secured.
