Plastics to me are those fans who are only there when 'their' team is winning, or even worse, change teams when fortunes change.
I have several friends who rarely attend games for various reasons, but follow the news, buy merchandise and listen to matches whenever they can. I consider them to be real fans, although they haven't made the same commitment to Saints that I have(They will all admit it themselves too). Their level of support never waivered however, even as we plunged down through the leagues and they were just as quick to tell people they were Saints fans in League 1 as they were when we were in the Premiership.
I always though a plastic was an armchair critic a so called fan that is able but doesn't actually attend matches. However he or she reads reports or watches the game on the box and feel they are the experts in football awareness and tactics.
So already we have two versions perhaps....any others?
There is no need to get personal, insult people or get downright nasty (or ridiculously OTT like that infamous night of chaos) should get a yellow card or it's forum equivalent. Of course an old style yellow card for a real offence and not a modern day yellow card for calling someone a southern softie or a plonker etc.
If someone deliberately tries to avoid the swear filter (by using numbers or spaces etc.) meaning that those who do not want to see swear words and therefore use the swear filter (which is their right) are offended should be given a clip round the ear warned that they will get a yellow card if they do it again. If you want a swear word in your post then type it properly so that those of us using the swear filter can enjoy our right not to see it.
What everybody should do when someone does get a little bit insulting or offensive or personal is what I do:
1 - Get comfy in the sofa (or whever you sit when viewing t'interweb (<-----I'm up north. lol)
2- Stretch and warm up the fingers.
3 - Take a deep breath or 2
4 - Commence creating you post using the whole 10,000 characters that a single post can contain.
5 - If the first post had to include 'continues......' at the end then start the following post with '.............continued'
6 - Scan through and correct any errors you see (not all but at least what you notice during that quick scan
7 - Continue on t'interweb with something else knowing that you are now calm and the insulter is now spending his time reading your post instead of insulting people. lol
I remember a certain poster on that infamous night who was starting thread after thread, post after post and he/she ended up unable to continue doing so as I keep him/her busy talking nonsense about my wife being a Portuguese Goddess (his/her words.) Portuguese? Yes she is. Much younger than I? Yes she is. Goddess? If you mean like the Army's Green Goddess' then yes being a size 20 she fits that bill. lol

I haven't been to a Saints Game for nearly 10 years but buy a shirt every year, try to see every stream whenever I can or listen on the radio if no stream. I am passionate beyound measure and am often in the pub defending my beloved team against the Chelsea, Man Utd etc fanboys and I am so excited at the moment with how my beloved Saints are doing so well when only 3 years ago I could hardly move, was close to tears at the thought they were days away from extinction.
I haven't been to a game because since I got married I ahave been absolutely broke quite literally and living up Narth it costs a fortune in travel and tickets and being the 'Goddess described above' that kind of money going from such a tight budget would render my 10 stone skinny frame liable to a snapping or at least a severe bruising.
I do want to take my sons this year though, Things are looking up in this Narthern 'boom town' that is bucking the recession trend (according to Newsnight last week. lol)
I most definitely do not consider myself a plastic. I support the team. by definition my investment in a shirt every season is supporting my team. By sheer passion bordering obsession I am a fan, and if I were to live in Winchester where most the family live I would most definitely go to many games a season.
I find it more insulting to be called a plastic fan or for it to be suggested I am especially by those who should be on the same bus as me (yet more fortunate in terms of finance and location and situation) than when a Manure 'supporter' says to me 'What's the point in Saints coming up just to go down again or fight another never ending relegation battle?
Some should consider that others do what they can and can not attend matches though they wish they could.

I have to admit that with Lowe & Co in charge and the imminent dive into League One about to happen, I began to wonder, at the time, if my other interests were more worthwhile. I do have a lot of other interests, and because of those and work commitments, I rarely get the chance to attend games, these days, but I always have an ear or eye on SFC's progress. When Saints were bought by Markus Liebherr I was spared any decision on my commitment to follow the Club. I suspect I would have stayed whatever the condition of Saints, but thankfully, that is now in the past. I'm not old enough to have known Saints in the 3rd division, but the time they spent there recently was so happy. This particular 2nd division campaign is way more fun than I remember the last one being, and I attended every Home game off that one. Here's to looking forward to the longest and most successful 1st division stay that there has ever been.

The asterix in swearing thing is areal throwback to the BBC site. Totally unnecessary on here of course, and as you say counter productive. The downside about being a Mod on here is that I don't feel I can use the ignore function, which I certainly would otherwise!
Ain't that the truth. The last time in the championship I attended most home games and I just remember their Men playing our boys, who were just pushed off the ball. We were just bullied out of the division. Can't see Lambert being pushed anywhere!
Ha..! I'd forgotten that stay, CF. I think I'd blanked it out..! Yes, I did attend many of those games too. I actually meant our few years in the 2nd tier during the 1970's.

Well, I was only a "nipper" and no-one in my family went to the footy then. Whatever happened to expressions like "nipper" and "mush"? They seem to have died out, rather like the " two fingered salute" which I never see, except when Mrs Fodder and I exchange the gesture, when the kids aren't looking!
We stopped doing that behind the kids backs once we were caught. They were about 4 and 6 at the time and we had to give them some explanation. It was the next night I think I had to try and explain away why Mummy was on Daddy's tummy when interrupted in the bedroom!! No easy explanations...........
Let me see, I suppose I was still a nipper, at that point, being 15, and I'd been going to the Dell, pretty much on my own for years. As I've mentioned before, there was nobody, save one Uncle, who even mentioned Saints, let alone followed them. All Speedway fans, my family, and that stopped in the early 1960's when the Bannister Court stadium was sold for re-development and the Championship winning Saints team was disbanded.
My Dad called everyone Mush, sometimes even Mum..! Only last week, I was watching an excellent programme on the Longbow, which of course contained the two fingered salute, born of The Battle of Agincourt. I've got to admit, our salute has got some history and class.
They still say Mush up here but always in an aggressive way not just as a name. 'Fella' has slowly pushed the standard non aggressive use out. Ther is no friendly greeting of 'alright mush'. It's a most definite aggressively toned 'Oi....... Mush' these days.
Nipper is also still used as is plonker et al.
I remember Chav was used when I was a kid in this area Lincoln/Newark etc but it didn't mean what we consider it today. It was just a case of 'alright Chav' same as 'alright mate'
A lot of this is disappearing though with the dominance of text speek, Gangsta slang and downright annoying American influence.
Maybe we're a little behind the times up here. Anyways does the Tesco 24 hour sell Mead anymore?

My father still calls me 'nipper' and I am 52! He, bythe way, is 81 today and goes to every Eastleigh home game - rain or shine! He started taking me to the Dell in 1965...
Nipper (or Nip) is widely used on the Island, but mush is aggressive (so of course is rarely heard here
).
P.s. did you you know that mush is actually short for monsieur and was used for all foreigners at one point.
