Living in Merton (predominantly Chelsea area) and having a close family friend who lived at Fulham Court and had been going Chelsea since the 70s for me it was a fairly obvious choice. My family are all Gooners but closest friends at the time were Chelsea, West Ham and Arsenal. When I first started school everybody either supported Chelsea or Arsenal with the odd West Ham and Man Utd. I didn't know a Fulham or Spurs fan up until about 6 years ago and only know a handful of QPR fans. I didn't go to my first Chelsea game till the late 90s but it's an experience I'll never forget (unfortunately the match was one to forget a boring 1-0 win for us). I feel lucky to have missed out on the 80s but really unlucky to have missed out on the 60s and early 70s. Anyone else want to share their stories about becoming a Blue?
I'm not and never have been a Chelsea fan.I think they and their fans are a bunch of ruffians and reprobates.I also dislike the Chelsea mods on here as they are berks of the highest order especially that nancy boy who calls himself Drogs
My dad and mum big Blues in the 50s, 60s, 70s. Started going in mid70s with the old man. Mid 80s home and away was my golden era whe I started going with mates home and away. 83-6 my favourite years. A lot of my mates are Rangers, Fulham and a few Bees too.
First footie game i ever watched on the tv was chelsea leeds fa cup final, so a blues fan i become, i then remember the cup winners cup against madrid and getting beat by stoke in the league cup final : ( At junior school an array of different clubs were supported but by secondary school (being in east london) nearly every kid had become a hammer, the sheep i used to call them !!
Born and raised in Kent, junior school I went to was CofE and we didn't have any grass, only concrete, so we weren't allowed to play football for fear we might break ourselves or the windows so I only really got into footie at high school after watching Euro 96. My Mum had noticed that I was getting into it but I didn't support a team, so she mentioned that her uncle played for Chelsea boys and she remembered going to the Bridge a few times growing up (she grew up in Tooting) so I thought I'd follow them for a bit. I used to take the little TV out of the kitchen on a Saturday night and watch MOTD in my bedroom and Football Italia on a Sunday and lo and behold I got to watch an amazing FA Cup run/win that included that amazing 4-2 turnaround against Liverpool, the game that cemented my love for the blues. It was also helped by the fact my mates all supported Arsenal or Man Utd and I didn't want to be accused of copying them Hehe... Frode Grodas
First game I saw was Leeds in 70 cup final. It grew from there really. First game was Burnley at home in 79-80.
When I was a kid my mates used to collar me to go to Millwall, which I did and paid very little interest in what was going on. Then a fellow in my class at school asked me if I wanted to join him on a trip to SB. It was the last game of the 58-59 season! It was a magic spell! I was hooked for life. After that I never missed a game in London until 1973 (my wedding day)
Ah well, I can bring the score back in the mens favour on that one cos I met Chelsea on my wedding day in 2010! I'll post a pic of it if it's not breaking rules please log in to view this image
My grandad had played for Arsenal, but when I came to London from Sydney in 1969, I shared a house with 4 Chelsea fans. Started going to the matches with them, ( battles when we played Leeds ) and have supported them ever since. Bought a house in Chelsea in 1986, and lived there until my return to OZ in 2010. Now have to get up at 1am for mid day kick offs, or can sleep in until 6.45am for night games. My wife thinks I'm crazy not to record, but nothing like real time games.
First football game I ever got interested in was the cup final 1967 we lost 2-1 to the spuds, Frank Saul and Jimmy Robertson scored for them and Bobby Tambling scored the consolation for us late on. It was a long way to go for me to home games so I used to go to all the away games in the midlands. I can remember going to Hereford in the 80's we were in the old second division I blew my first car up on the way (Hillman Imp) we hitched a lift for the last couple of miles, I think we won 2-0 I can remember being shepherded by the police to the train station and getting the train home. My brother towed my car back the next day. Happy days, long gone but fondly remembered.
Thats a great story-Cuckoo! I was at that match at Wembley, and it was a miserable experience as it was the first time I'd ever been able to watch the Blues at Wembley! Saw them win the plastic cup a few years before against Leicester , but that was home & away fixtures! Didn't have to wait long too long though, for a Wembley return!
My uncle was a Tottenham supporter & took me & my older brother (who was a Chelsea fan) to Spuds v Chelsea in 1967. I fell in love with the Chelsea kit & that was that. We drew 1-1 by the way & I was at Wembley in 1970 against Leeds. I could've gone to the replay (had a ticket) but my mum wouldn't let me go up to Manchester!
I live in Blackpool these days and we got married at a local DeVere hotel/golf place, and they were due to play Blackburn the next day. They tend to fly up to Blackpool airport and stay here overnight when they play Blackburn and they just happened to be at the same hotel! They were eating their tea in the next room so the concierge spoke to the PR guy who then asked the players if they would come out to meet us and they did. I was bloody chuffed to say the least. Met Ancelotti, Wilkins, Zhirkov, Ivanovic, Essien, Cole, Bruma, Anelka... got our guestbook signed too!
Great story coolhand!! My wedding day brought to an end 13 years without missing a single game at the Bridge! Yours provided a day most of could only dream of!
Great days, eh Ginge! Didn't seem right though having the class of Tambling/Bridges/Chopper/ Bonetti/McCreadie and Albert Murray and only having the plastic cup to show for it!
That was my first game. My older brother was a fan and he got me a ticket and dragged me along. That was that. 45 years! You get less for murder!!!!!!
