The thing that annoys me about this is that it appears to have been blown up by something which was undoubtedly a foul.
The Stevenage player that suggested it was a dive should apologise after seeing a replay, as there's no doubt that he made substantial contact.

And, annoyingly, Nelsen successfully withdrew his foot in time to avoid contact for their penalty. We come out of that game looking guilty and they were only guilty parties.

Now as far as the Stevenage game goes it is, for me, incredibly clear what happened: Bale knocked the ball forward with his right foot by mistake, took an air-swing at the ball, missed it but did kick the defender whose leg/foot was there to block the cross. No dive, no foul, goal kick.

I surely can't be alone in seeing this...

I'd agree to some extent Lenny, but I think that it's still a foul, as Bale's leg doesn't travel past his body when contact's made.
The defender is more responsible for it than the attacker, in my opinion.
He was rash.

He is a diver and anyone who says "im not surprised he dives with the tackle that go in on him" is a total hypocrite. You lot slated Ronaldo and Suarez for diving as if they don't get bad tackles put in on them? There is no excuse for diving/cheating on the pitch and Bale does it a lot but he is certainly not the only one, a lot of players do it because they know they can get away with because the refs are all clowns and the f.a are a pathetic, weak organisation that won't ban people for diving.

I've criticised players from other sides for diving and now we've actually got one, I'm criticising him, too.

I hate hypocrites.

It's a funny one - Bale definitely moves towards the point of contact more than the other way round. All in all it was a bit of a balls-up by the pair of them really. Very harsh penalty once you get the chance to look at it again and again on a replay. I wouldn't give it myself. (Unless it was against Man Utd, obviously. In that case I'd give Spurs a couple of penalties every time they got into the box to give us some chance of winning).

Bale has come out with the statement that by being clever he has got players sent off this year. To me this is tantamount to cheating. I have said on here before about his diving and after this statement surely he will be a marked man by refs which will be detrimental to the whole team, as good as he is I don't want a cheat in a Spurs shirt

You have seriously misinterpreted Bales comments. I doubt your Spurs credentials and I doubt you are posting in good faith. You have been noticed coyspurs.

I am staggered you think that. One of the more nailed on penalties I've seen. The defender shoves his foot in and doesn't get the ball. Contact is made during an intended strike of the ball. I don't know how much more you need. 100% penalty.

In the past I've agreed with the idea that Bale dives about as often as the other top Prem players--neither less nor more. It is worth pointing out that he's had horror tackles end his seasons twice, and he's hardly started his career. Where's the outrage over that?

So diving is terrible, but systematic, strategic fouling of players to the point where it ends their seasons is perfectly okay? It seems to me they're both cheating, and the second has worse consequences than the first.

So what I should say, is that while Bale dives neither more nor less than most top players, he may get fouled more often and more harmfully than almost any.

I hate diving but it is worth remembering that bale signed for us in July 07...was very good at times until he was caught late v Brum and was out from Dec 07 til sept 08. He then got another season ending injury from an horrific tackle last season...interestingly neither tackle got a red card.

I said other players dive and I include Gerrard in that, I can't exactly deny it after that video now can I? The difference is I don't defened Liverpool players that dive like some of you are doing on this thread with pathetic excuses, the tv replays don't lie.

What riles me, is hearing people say "if there is contact, the player has a right to go down"! why? football is a contact sport, not like rugby but there is always contact and unless a player causes someone to be tripped or commits a blatant foul, then footballers need to stay on their feet.

Bale has gone down easily once or twice and I dont like to see it, but most of the time he is flying down the wing and gets clattered from all angles so the slightest touch will easily bring him down.

This is far different from habitual divers like Suarez, who can manage a full somersault from a standing start without contact or minimal contact if any.

On another note how is it that one of the worst divers around (Steven Gerrard), never has the media discussing his antics..... some of his dives on youtube are quite comical. Maybe its because he plays for Liverpool and is English.

It's not about rights it's simply about safety. If a player in full flight sees a foot coming in, unless he jumps to avoid contact he risks serious injury that is the point Bale is making. Once jumping it's often only safe to fall rather than risk trying to stay on your feet.

Gerrard does accuse other players of diving and criticizes them for it too, though.

I don't defend Bale's diving when he actually does it, against your lot for example, but he appears to be picking up criticism now when he's definitely not at fault, for some reason.
People are suggesting that he's trying to get out of the way of this sort of disgraceful attempt to hurt him, rather than taking it and getting injured, though:

If someone's coming in like that, then fair enough, but he's going over anticipating far less "robust" challenges, shall we say.

Don't think like a pansy as this is about players cheating, the worse are the ones that make contact with the defender and then go down like they have been shot in the head, the defender is left standing there fuming while the diver knows he has done wrong but he as cheated to gain an advantage.

As for serious injury? you must have a body made of glass as were not talking about dangerous tackles here, were talking about contact......tell you what, go to the park and go for a wee sprint and ask someone to run alongside you, kicking you in the leg and see how hard it takes to kick you that you actually fall over without tripping you.

Of course, if someone wanted to trip you, that would be easy, which is what cheats play on, they simulate a trip, when in reality they just felt someone touch them, so decided to dive.

First I am talking about Bale and let's be clear I do not think he is a cheat. I am not talking about obvious diving. I AM talking about dangerous tackles.

You go for a wee sprint and I will come at you from an angle, not side by side, then we will see who the bloody pansy is.

I back Bale all the way on this, he is trying to save his career. He is neither a cheat or a diver, the cheats are the thugs and cloggers who try to cripple him.

I expect Everton to use their usual dirty tactics against us tomorrow. One of the most horrible teams in the Prem, and doubtless Neville will be using all his 'professional tricks' to stymie a player that he couldn't live with if he didn't resort to foul play.
