a Saints legend - Channon for example - felt that times were so hard that they felt forced to sell medals and other things that were an integral part of the history of the club. I ask because of a local news article in Liverpool about Tommy Smith selling his collection and hopes to raise £120k. Given that Stevie G is probably paid this weekly, shouldn't Liverpool FC be giving Tommy, say, £200k and putting this stuff in their museum? For those too young to remember, Tommy was part of the great Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1977 and came close to the Treble.

Would we deal with a genuine hero any better? Ron Davies, for example.

Just a thought, and interested in the views of fellow Saints - another slow news day!
 
Not sure we would... Cortese is a thrifty man and I suspect would not want to give out freebies... Though he is heavily involved with the Saints Foundation so perhaps if the "legend" was agreeable toward him, and hadn't had an argument with him, then maybe he would.... Who knows?

Heard this the other day on Radio 5 Drive. Tommy Smith was talking to Peter Allen, and when they'd finished and Allen started to comment about Smith, he proposed that the Liverpool players ought to have a whip round. £10,000 each wouldn't hurt them too much. Personally, I think Liverpool ought to buy them off him for his hoped for price. Now onto part two...

Funny you should mention Ron Davies. I helped start a charity called Give It To Ron [yes, I've mentioned this before] which managed to privately fund two new hips, a new set of teeth, not dentures, I should add. Plus nearly £13,000 leftover money, for Ron himself, before we closed the charity down, just last year. All done by donations from Saints fans. I know Saints fans have memories and they care. I received all the fantastic letters before sending them on, and all the cheques before banking them for Ron's benefit.

If Liverpool don't win the Carling Cup at the weekend then maybe they will make an offer to Smith for his medals. Would at least give them an excuse to open the Anfield trophy cabinet again...!! :)

I recall and indeed contributed to this. But in a way it makes the same point. It took the action of a fan to get a whip round for big Ron, a Saints legend. Why was this not organised by Southampton FC? Old school Liverpool Reds will be annoyed about this story, and why LFC could not have come out and even organised something, let alone put their hands in their pockets, is beyond them and me.

Initially, simply because the situation was unknown to them. In the same way the Bobby Stokes died, due really to severely reduced circumstances, and yet nobody knew about it, or did anything about it until it was too late, so the same thing was happening with Ron Davies. The fact that Ron was known about at all was because of a friend of mine, who corresponded with John Sydenham. During a conversation, Syddo said that he'd lost touch with Ron, to which my friend asked me and a few others if we could track him down. Well, I managed to come up with a last known address and phone number. That led us onto Ron, but it didn't help us, because he wanted to be left alone. All went quiet until Jeremy Wilson [Southampton Cult Heroes Book] made contact with Ron and got an interview. We talked to Jeremy and he said how private Ron wanted to stay. It went quiet. Then I wrote something about it on the Saints Forever forum and a totally new fan responded and said we might to get something going. So we did. At that point we started to get everybody involved, and if you've clicked on the website links you'll read how many peope did lend a hand, especially our two people in the USA. The club lent us a staff member, detailing all the mail and cheques and passing them onto me [so it was impossible for me to jump on a one-way plane to Brazil and not be suspected] and they were involved in other ways too. Short of actually dolling over some cash themselves [remember, the club had none], it was difficult to think what else they could do. The important thing is that Ron is fine now.
