Nass - plenty of times do Betfair have deceased horses in their markets, sick as it sounds they're not very good at removing horses from markets who are no longer with us but bets struck will be settled....

Grizz I know there is no rule 4 on Ante-post books but then again there are normally no refunds on ante-post books.

I think they're just refund bets placed on Backstage, not because they have to but because the PR surrounding any failure to do so would be huge.
Bookies don't lose on ante post books, refunds just reduce their profit marginally, and to be fair the Foxhunters won't have been one of the biggest betting races until now.
Where it gets complicated is with doubles/trebles etc on slips that offer bonuses - people could have had a big treble Big Bucks/Quevega/Backstage that may have rewarded a bonus on winning bets but knowing Backstage can't go so does the bonus apply to the double and therefore give the punter an inflated price double ???
There'll be some clever people out there who would have been doing this yesterday I expect....

There will be something in the small print on them bonuses that says if one doesn't take part the bonus isn't awarded

Excellent spot, Zen. And pleased to see that all ante-post stakes have been returned rather than those bookie chappies hiding behind a 'buyer beware' policy.

Re the Foxhunters, Barbers Shop only remains a 16/1 shot because in effect it is a 2 staged bet rather than a regular single. Part 1 is that first he qualifies for the Cheltenham race and part 2 is obviously that he then wins it. He needs to finish 1st or 2nd, at Fontwell Park on Sunday to qualify (similar comments apply to Palypso De Creek in the same race). Would imagine that if he was already qualified the old boys odds would be half his current figure.

In that case, should he fail to qualify do they return stakes on him for the Cheltenham Foxhunters when, by virtue of his failure at Fontwell, he was inelligable for the Cheltenham race ?
Different scenario I know and I'm sure next years ante post book will see big red markers saying if a horse either fails to qualify or is deemed to be inelligable no refunds will be made....

He is able to qualify this season though, Backstage is not, and that is the difference.

I would guess that if a horse fails to qualify you have done your money but obviously a refund if there was never any prospect of the horse running, as with Backstage (and Vic Venturi too I might add).

Edit: As Nass says. Barber's Shop can qualify to run this season, Backstage never could.

Bookies have refunded and Betfair have voided bets.

I actually have Backstage 5 times in small ante-post doubles and trebles, just small fry £2, £3 but knowing he wasn't actually allowed to run is a pain. Does anybody know if the bookies just remove him and keep the bet valid ?? (ie - treble to a double), bets are with Ladbrokes and BetFred ?? ta all

Yep, best to contact them, but I would imagine the bets are still live as singles and doubles.

I wonder if connections of Backstage will get their entry fee refunded?

Good point - should the authorities have rejected the trainers declaration ?
Can Paul Nicholls declare Kauto Star for the Derby ?

Its down to the trainer or his secretary to know if the horse is qualified or not.

BARBERS SHOP is 16-1 because he IS a 16-1 shot. Would rather be on SALSIFY myself.

My only AP bet is On The Fringe for the same race and whilst he was slightly disappointing on debut, the defections of Baby Run,Zemsky and now Backstage have improved his chances.

I don't like Chapoturgeon at all..non stayer in a race that is always run at a good clip.

Not overly keen on Barber Shop either despite his decent festival record. He didn't overly impress lto getting weight and I'm not convinced his stamina is copper bottomed either.Clearly his presence in this division is an indication that his ability has waned considerably.I feel his participation has more to do with giving ER11 a runner on her Jubilee visit rather than anything else.

Agree Salsify is interesting, especially with his form on decent ground.

Normally the most predicable of races, this renewal is turning into bit of a minefield for punters.

Stick, you can be sure that if Barbers Shop wins on Sunday he will not be a 16/1 shot! Think of the Fontwell Park race as his semi-final. If he comes through this as required he will then progress to the old Final where a ‘winners medal’ may await the old boy.

Meanwhile, I find it quite scandalous that Stan James are quoting Silverburn for this heat when he can no longer qualify for the race! Disgraceful! I feel like writing to Gloria Hunniford on ‘Rip off Britain’ about this as you can guarantee that dear old Glo would sort them out.

Nass, I see that the named trainer of your Clody Lane will shortly revert from Mrs back to Mr McCain. Curious, I say curious, move...
