How times have changed

Discussion in 'Arsenal' started by Jayram_Football, Feb 19, 2012.

  1. Just three years ago an upcoming Arsenal v Spurs game would have filled every gooner with joyful anticipation and every Spurs fan with dread.

Gooners everywhere would know that we were highly likely to win, and Spurs fans would hope for one of those rare upsets that would give them some relief from the hurtful fact that they were far far inferior to Arsenal

    Its now the opposite.

No Arsenal fan really believes we can beat Spurs, but we hope that we can cause an major upset.

Spurs fans everywhere cant wait for the game because they know they are better than us and highly likely to win - and easily.

Its a shocking state of affairs - and one that makes me feel sick to the core.

Its made worse by the fact that Spurs have just over half of our revenues, and pay their players less money.

We can hope of course - but we've been left feeling terrible so many times when hope has been dashed.

Good to see Arsenal fans putting the support into supporter . . .

I think we can beat the Spuds, but we'll need to get behind the team to do so, simply groaning about it isn't going to help them.

  3. You hope we will beat Spurs. You dont really think we can, because that would be utterly foolish.

I both hope and think we can beat Spurs.

Left to you, we might as well give up now.

  5. No I am still hoping - but that is all we have.

Spurs are a much better team than us - as I said with less revenue and with lower wages.

Do you refute the fact that we now go into the Spurs game as underdogs - even at home - whilst 3 years ago this game would almost have been a banker 3 points?

  6. That just sums up our last seven seasons, does it not? Being thereabouts but never there. Come February and the season falls apart. Is it a wonder that key players leave us?

There are so many things wrong with the performance side of the club that it seems one new problem compounds another. They all stem from the fact that the team has been allowed to fall into decline all these years. There has been little or no renewal worth the name and now just about every aspect of the game is falling down.

But wait, there is a claim that we're in contention. Just as in January the word goes out that we are in 3 or 4 competitions. Then of course we are brought back crashing down to earth again in February. That is the vision of the people who run our club.. If you lack vision, how can you ever see the prize? Some though are happy with that and create threads here saying we are the ones who are wrong.....

If the players just show a little more fighting spirit, I'll be happier. A draw wouldn't be a disaster but another loss would.

  8. Piskie's idea of support is like shifting deckchairs on the Titanic. Not enough and ultimately unsuccessful. Only he doesn't and cannot see it.

Those with no vision cannot see into the future. You have to build beyond simply having hope. Hope is not enough but they simply don't understand that and think it is.

Nice spiel - but ultimately missing the point.

We need to improve, that's clear.

But we're talking about showing the team some support here, not giving up before a ball is even kicked.

of course we will be supporting the boys to beat spurs ... it goes with saying .. put the support into supporter what a condescending comment is this from a moderator?, its really quite disgraceful.

i supported arsenal in the 80s when we where poor .. the players could get 200% support and fail as they were not that good and other teams were better ...

i will support the guys 100% v spurs .. they may win or they may lose who cares .... fact is 3/4 of the season gone and yet again results and excuses are poor poor poor .. supporting a guy like bergkamp, wrighty or henry helped but it never made them better players ... they were always great players period .. fact is we have 1 left and at the minute spurs have a bucket full ,,, what goes around comes around, success in cycles is common.

time to put the arsene supporters out to rest now such condescending comments will be supported by yet another cancelled entry on 606 as some people simply cannot accept anothers point of view ... i feel really sad for them to be honest its truely sad to see them here.

if your not good enough ... your not good enough but i guess the guy in question knows this 100%

  11. No one can argue that we do not support the team since all of us are united in hope but there is the inevitable disappointment as it has been over the past seven years. You choose not to address the issues of the club Piskie. We do. If you want to continue your vision through tinted glasses, be my guest but don't expect everyone else to do so.

  12. Piskie, why not answer this question:

Do you refute the fact that we now go into the Spurs game as underdogs - even at home - whilst 3 years ago this game would almost have been a banker 3 points?

I think we are underdogs, but that doesn't mean we can't win this game.

  14. Well at lest we agree on that - and therefore must agree that we have declined severely under Wenger.

  15. We all hope to win the game Piskie.

We also realise that there is the matter of where the odds lie. Unlike you, we hope that the management of the club do something about it and will not blindly support the absence of ambition on the part of this board or manager. Simply hoping does not get the job done.

While all crumbles around us, you rarely address the issues that faces the club but rise in support of those who create or foster the continuation of these issues. Hope is not enough and wins neither trophies nor keep us in Europe. It won't even get us into the Europa league.

We could be here for hours discussing the finer points of what we could, should, ought, been able to do, spend etc. But I agree that our squad needs an overhaul.

I still think we can win this game though.

I see no point going into it with a defeatist attitude. We might as well not even bother turning up if that's the case.

    Actually, you're wrong again Robin.

I've pointed out plenty of areas where I think we need to improve.

  18. I think waht is more worrying is that our players seem to be heading into games with a defeatist attitude - a very large part of the problem.

I would agree with that. Very worrying to see their heads go down after around 15 mins of yesterday's game.

This is where I think we as fans come in to try and give them a lift - and they are going to need it against Spurs.

Actually our home record is quite good this season. Doubtless Spurs are the better side at this point in time but remember, form counts for nothing in a derby.
