I just can't get my head around the fact that some people don't want us to get into Europe.....it beggars belief. I was at our last European game, against Sporting Lisbon 37 years ago....yes...THIRTY SEVEN YEARS AGO!!!!
    They say....its too early!
They say...give it a year or two!
So....we wait a couple of years.....and then what? Can you guarantee a top 5 finish? Of course you can't! In a couple of years time we could be back in the championship and a million miles (and another 37 years) from Europe.
    GRASP THE NETTLE!!
THE CHANCE IS HERE AND NOW!!

Davros, I'd take a place in Europe any day. I don't think that it’s a target for this year but then again I don’t think that not getting into Europe is a target. (I've said this in previous posts).
Like you I don't hold with the opinion that we are not ready and that we will be in a year or two; for me that is crystal ball stuff. If someone can guarantee that we will have a better squad in a year or two and the other teams in the PL do not also improve in the same way…………………

Totally agree guys = lets beat the scousers (which is a must), get something at Citeh - then we have a run-in where we should be able to pick up max points at home, and snatch a few away.

    5th is possible
    6th - more possible
7th/8th - most likely but still a grrrrrreat season
9th/10th - possible but will be disappointing at this stage
    11th or worse - unthinkable.

    Lol Bart
1-9 - still a record!!! Don't let the CRAAS forget it!!!!!!!

Agree with you davros. Think we will have a tremendous end to the season and thus hopefully pulling in some more high profile players

At the start of the season I said top 10 and that wouldn't be the end of the world but I think on paper we have as good if not a better squad than every team below us at the moment. Bolton are at Old Trafford on saturday and we have a winnable game v a very unpredictable Liverpool side. IF we win and Man Utd win then we've clawed our way right back into 6th place contention and gives us a good bit of confidence going to Man City and then our decent 7 game run in.

I'm not getting carried away with myself and I know it's going to be tough but I'm not giving up on Europe until we're mathematically out of the running.
And for those who don't want Europe....you miserable gits! haha ;)

Surely as professionals you try to win every game, okay you have respect for your opposition but that is different.
I understand that you have to be realistic but at the end the day we pay too much for our players for them just to provide target practice or light relief for other teams.

My view is you try to win every game, some you lose some you draw but not through the lack of trying to win.
That in itself does not necessarily mean that the start of the season you set out to win the league etc.

Regardless of how skillful your team is and how well they play unfortunately you also have to have a degree of luck on your side.

Would I like to get into Europe yes, so what is the argument about being ready? I believe it is about having a big enough quality squad to be able to cope with injuries and playing twice a week sometimes travelling long distances. After the recent run of form lost 4 won 1, with 'Pool and Citeh to come I suspect we will not automatically qualify for Eurpoe anyhow and if we did I suspect Mr Short would have to sped more than he intends this summer.

Where do we need quality players, well without Turner we do seem vulnerable to aerial bombardment. McBardo is great at LB but who is his back-up Rico?, Without Catt & Meyler we are need a defensive mid-fielder, Hendo has tried to play there and his form has suffered. The two latest midfielders look as if they are 'quality' but I guess Riveros is on the way out, so at least a left winger is required. We need 4 good strikers, even if we get Welbeck buy or loan next season we need another striker.
So yes lets go for Europe, I would like us first to target say 44 points asap, to avoid the relegation scrum, then see where we go from there. However be realistic about the squad we have and the squad we need, I think I've just spent north of £40m in the paragraph above not to mention the knock on impacy on the wage bill, we had better get building a bigger stadium!.

Some very good points mate. I personally don't think we are ready for Europe but then again we wouldn't be playing till next season anyway so i'm sure SB would have gone out and brought in the players he needs.

NQ recently said that we need to do all our business this summer and next January before the new regulations come into force which will restrict what the clubs can spend, apparently Mr Short is aware of this and is prepared to do whatever it takes to put the club into a competitive position. I'm expecting big things this summer in the transfer market and qualification into Europe will only help to acquire that better class of player.

So, for me qualification is vital to the club unless we want to be left behind.

Having said all that I do think we will struggle to qualify, but you never know, we have some key players coming back into the team and some "should win" games at home, some games away that we should also pick up points as well. I think it depends on how Liverpool do over the next few games that will dictate our fate.
