For all those of you who are complaining about how our season is going:

If we beat Cardiff at wembley, it will be a first piece of silverware for 5 years, and a return to European football. That, in my opinion, is a successful season in itself.

Add to that the fact that we are only 4 points off 4th place, having played the Manchester clubs and Spurs, with Arsenal and Chelsea having to come to Anfield.

Plus, if we beat Brighton this weekend, we'll be in the Quarter finals of yet another major competition.

Suarez is back, Carroll is hitting form, Gerrard isn't injured, and Spearing has slotted into our first team brilliantly. Add to that perhaps two of the most inspired pieces of buisness done in the summer- Bellamy and Enrique.

We have lots to look forward too. Kenny WILL lead us to success. YNWA

Do people actually care about the cups anymore? They're meaningless for anyone except for the lower half of the table and below.

We're going to be building for the next two years at least, so i'd accept the Europa league next season so long as we're in touching distance of the CL. Next season in the Europa, blooding in some of our quality youth and a few more good signings in the next three transfer windows and we're good to start a real push in the 2013/2014 season. That's realistic imo.

Any way, are you saying if you had a choice between winning the Carling Cup and qualifying for the Champions League, you would take the Carling Cup?

It is the point, you would rather see us lift an insignificant trophy rather than qualify for a prestigious competition which would do us wonders in taking our redevelopment forward.

So a trophy and a European place in his first full season back is a failure?

BBB you are deffo a wum lad,4th place was never a foregone conclusion this season.
 
Winning the Carling Cup wouldn't propel us back into a position where we can sign some of the best players from around Europe. But qualifying for the Champions League would. Not only will it make us a more attractive prospect to potential signings, it will bring us in more money than winning the Carling Cup, and then we can go on with an even stronger squad and compete for trophies that are actually worth something.

The only ****** here is you, because you don't see the benefits of qualifying for the Champions league over winning a Carling Cup. A trophy named after larger...
 
Have to agree with the OP. Although CL qualification is the key thing to win, I'd be happy with a cup or two and an improvement on last year's position. You can debate whether cups are important until the cows come home, but winning something is better than winning nothing. (I think all silverware is important, it's just that some are axiomatically more important than others.) For me, the most important thing is that LFC progresses. I have to say it may still be early (new squad/manager), but the signs are promising. Although I've not been happy with our results, or our lack of goals, I have been impressed with our performances. We've played (mostly) high tempo games with good possession and crisp, accurate passing. Our defense is looking very solid and we've created plenty of goal scoring opportunities. If we can strap on our proper shooting boots, we'll be fine. A few more additions to the squad, to strengthen certain positions, (bought or brought in from youth team) and I think the confidence and success will flow. In short, I'm saying we have a lot of positives to focus on. <ok>

I'm sorry, but a Europa League place isn't acceptable as qualifying for Europe, it my mean it technically, but it's not a level we should be content with.
 
The good thing about winning cups is that these are events which can give huge impetus to a club, and bond the players with the club and its fans.

Finishing 4th will inevitably give the players bonuses, and the club money to spend, and the fans will like that they'll be playing in Europe. Yes, that's true. But winning a cup final will give both the fans and players something to hold on to; something palpable. Something that will galvanise players into wanting more success, more events like this. It will increase the fans respect for the players and vice versa.

It is no surprise that the players who win trophies (any) with clubs will generally stay the longest. For me the cup-effect cannot be overstated. Success breeds success. ;) <ok>

I asked if you think a trophy and a European place in Dalglish's 1st full season back was a failure?

The turmoil of securing new owners and the debt H&G left us with along with appointment of Hodgson have played a major part in our fall from the 'top 4' and CL football.

If it's qualification for the Europa League, then yes, it is failure.
If it's qualification for the Champions League, then it's not a failure.
