Rovers fan in peace.

Thought I'd ask you guys as there doesn't seem to be many Rovers fans on here yet (no jokes needed!). How was the game today? The report on Sky said it wasn't very good but fans in the stand sometimes have different opinions. From a Rovers point of view it was a good result, especially with the Scunthorpe and Sheff Utd results. Any points gained are good at the moment!

You belong where you finish in the table. At the moment it's the Championship and hopefully next year it will be the same.

I don't understand the Leeds complex with Doncaster. Is it because it we're in the same league and reminds you of how far you've fallen?
 
That would be the same Wigan that has spent the last six years in the Premier League and reached the league cup final? Whereas in the same time period the mighty Leeds have been in the 2nd/3rd tiers and done nothing. Seriously, you need to get this chip off your shoulder and admit that the 'smaller' teams are now bigger than Leeds (and I don't put Doncaster in the bracket before the dummy well and truely comes out).

Doncaster have had years and years of awful football and and small fan base, it's something that won't change in the space of a few years. If we keep on the way we are then gradually things will improve and if it doesn't then we enjoyed the ride. As much as you hate to admit it we're your rivals now and not the Man Utds of this world.

Define to me, then, how you judge the size of a club. Because by my criteria, Wigan don't come close to Leeds United.

Actually we don't care about Doncaster, you're just a local town full of Leeds fans as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the Donny Whites feel some enmity with you, I wouldn't really know. We still hate Man U who we've been enemies with for 45 years now and they still hate us. Thing is, our divisional rivals and our historical rivals are two completely different ideas which you're conflating. Not that Doncaster are either of those things, you're at the arse end of the table so hardly competing with us, and we have no history of animosity so there's no actual hatred there from our perspective.
 
I'm not denying that Leeds are a big club, I'm not stupid enough to say that. The facts are that you haven't won a major trophy for nearly twenty years yet you still claim to be a massive club. How far do you go back before there's a change in status? Huddersfield have one the same amount of championships as Leeds, do you class them in the same breath?

If you don't care about Doncaster why did you say we should be relegated back to where we belong? Sounds like animosity to me, or you're just a WUM. Either way it's pretty sad.

A) You said Leeds are smaller than the 'small clubs' I'd mentioned, including Wigan. To my knowledge, the fact that Leeds have won nothing in the last 18 years is irrelevant here, as Wigan have never won major silverware.
B) Huddersfield's silverware was won too long ago to matter. The stuff we won under Revie is the reason many of our supporters still support us today.
C) Silverware is not the be all and end all of how big a club is. The biggest determining factor should be fanbase. Any survey will tell you Leeds is still one of the biggest clubs in the country. So yeah, a massive club.

I don't care about Wigan either in terms of passionate feeling. Nor does any other Leeds fan as far as I can tell. My only opinion is that you're punching above your weight and not showing any signs of become less small time. Not sure what's sad about that.

B) From what time does winning trophies become relevent........late sixties at a guess?
C) I'd still go at big club as I said before and not massive. Massive to me would be a worldwide fanbase. Unless there's another word after massive to describe that.

What's sad about it is that you're hoping for a team to get relegated that you claim not to have any feeling against. God knows what you'd say about a team you didn't like.

A) There is no trophy requirement or threshold. I'd just suggest it helps. For example, Newcastle haven't won anything for 50 odd years now, they're still a massive club. Same goes with Man City. Like I say, fanbase is the fairest determining factor.

B) I'd say silverware is relevant as long as it affects matchgoing fans. So maybe since about the mid 50s when the oldest fans who still go to matches might still have been in their teenage years. Pretty subjective debate, but Huddersfield's honours from the 20s have no bearing on the HTAFC of today. Don Revie's influence will be with Leeds United forever; before him we were no more important than a club like today's Hull.

C) Leeds United do have fans from all over the world. Our official website (the fifth most visited of any English club) recently ran a competition to get fans writing in from round the world. Turned out we had fans from nearly every country. There's dozens of foreign language LUFC fansites, not sure you could exactly say the same about Wigan or Wolves. As for what comes above massive? You have titanic clubs like Man U, Barcelona and Real Madrid. They are worldwide commercial empires. Galacticos.

...and now I can exclusively introduce: D) My argument is entirely consistent. I want small, **** clubs to go down and worthy ones to stay up. I hate clubs like Man U and Chelsea, but they staying in the Premiership is fine by me. Would cream myself laughing if they got relegated though, as they did when we went down.

By your own argument the Revie era wouldn't have won anything. Leeds had won nothing previously so they should have been in the second/third division where they 'belonged'.

You support a team with history of winning trophies, you probably support them because of that, but why look down on other teams that haven't? Football would be a very boring sport if teams all stayed where they 'belonged' and had no ambition to make history. The English league has been going for well over a hundred years and yes Leeds have won more titles than most clubs but there's nothing to say that in the next hundred years you might be over taken by 'smaller' clubs.

I bet ten years ago you classed Chelsea as a 'small' club....

If you look back, a keystone of my argument was "maturing to ones new surroundings", something Revie's team did with almost unrivalled professionalism.

I support them because I come from Leeds. Hardly going to support Southend United when I was born two miles away from Elland Road, was I?

I agree and I love the idea of the underdog doing well - even when I'm watching foreign football I tend to urge on the team that isn't expected to win - but teams like Wigan and Donny have grown stale now, they have failed to become big-time and as a result I am bored of them and would like to see them return to the natural levels where those clubs belong. Division Three or Four kind of area. And ten years ago, Chelsea were not a small club. Look at their honours list and past attendances and fanbase, they have always been a big club.

Anyway, I'm happy to continue this via PM or on the Donny/Leeds board, but like the Forest poster says, we are clogging up their thread here.
 
To be honest if they keystone of your argument is that Doncaster haven't 'matured' to their surrounding after only two full seasons in the Championship then there really isn't much point in carrying on the conversation. Increased attendences and a higher league position in the two seasons would indicate maturing, albeit at a slow rate.

But you're right, I'll give them another two seasons to get promotion and qualify for the Champions League and if they haven't I'll save my time and money and change my team. Now should I go for a big club or a Titanic club....
