    How was my comment cretinous?
If you were 4th even with us having a 10 pt lead Id not have contributed.
But you are 6th ... Only 1 point ahead of 7th...we may
well collapse but you would need the others do so too...that was my only point si wind your neck in and debate without the isults

2nd,3rd,4th not really any difference in that all give CL places. It is a while since you won the EPL.
I know we've never won it.But we are having a good go at it,even if we only get 3rd it's a good effort and a building platform for the future.

The possibility of Spurs getting into the CL next year is a major shock as it is a freak occurrence & goes against the norm.

    Nuff said methinks.

Wumpole...on past history you have a good point... But the thread was about arsenal grabbing 3rd....cos we might collapse when you are in 6th place.
And your only win this year was against blackburn and you.ve only picked up 4 points from your past 5 matches including the blackburn game.
You need tfor at least 2 possibly 3 teams to fall apart AND get a run together to get 3rd...that is what seems like wishful thinking.

Since when did the last six seasons come in to it? Did I say these last six seasons were a success? Football didn't start six seasons ago fortunately.

  8. I have published my feelings on this topic elsewhere, but as long as Liverpool don't finish 4th I really couldn't care less who does (as long as we finish 3rd!). To be honest, and Im not trying to wum when I say this, but I don't think finishing 4th will be remotely constructive for Arsenal overall. Like last season, it will only serve to cover up the cracks that all but Wenger and your board are so blatantly aware of. In all honesty, I don't think 4th would be enough to hold onto RVP- which is a shame b/c he's a flipping class act and his loss (presumably to Barca or Real) would ultimately be the PL's loss.
Another season finishing 4th (perhaps with an FA Cup to show for it; with all due respect you are NOT good enough to win the CL!) would allow the clowns in charge of your club to merrily watch another transfer window stroll by w/o the MAJOR investments that Arsenal- quite frankly- are desperate for.

I can't see you finishing 3rd, simply b/c I feel Spurs are just too far ahead at this stage of the season and have already shown that we can cope quite well with mid-season distractions (whilst they may not be on the same magnitude as this, Harry missing a few weeks after his operation, the Olympic Stadium affair, and the recent tax trial all passed quite smoothly at THFC).

Whether or not Wenger stays, a 5th-place finish may- in the long run- do more good than harm for you, as it will galvanise long overdue action from your board and manager.

I think the CL has ruined things...clubs need the money and the merchandising revenue from the exposure it brings but getting 4th is more important than winning a trophy.
I know West Ham won the FA cup in 1980 but have no idea who came 2nd 3rd or 4th.
Can you remember your league position in 93? Bet youd know immediately that you won 2 cups that year....
Ah well...just have to accept i am just an ol bastard now...

  15. Come on, we're not getting 3rd. We're unlikely to get 4th.

<laugh> <laugh> We are only where we are because we have played badly not because anyone else has been particularly good. That I can assure you. <doh> The standard of the league is the lowest it has been in years. One only needs to look at the top of the table to see that, barring Man City.

So....when you are constantly in the top 4 and higher its cos you are doing well in a strong league (even though we all knew who were going to be in the top 4 before the season began) yet now you are doing bad we are only 3rd cos the league is ****e ... Hahahahahahaha .... it could be argued that you are only in with a shout of 4th cos everything below 3rd is **** but they would be as stupid as what you are arguing...the truth is that the league has evened out and a little .... and instead of there being arsenal, united, chelsea and liverpool and then the rest there is now city and spurs who are stronger in a serious sense making it a top 6 and then you may get other teams having good seasons like newcastle .... This suggests that there is more competition therefore the the prem is harder to play in and less predictable....otherwise following your logic the SPL must be a really hard league cos only 2 teams ever win it.

A ludicrous comment. Arsenal's average position in the PL is nearer 4th than 3rd and going farther back around 6th since being in the top flight. The Wenger years are abnormally good, not normal

There is truth in this comment & a precedent. At the beginning of the season vs United, AW deliberately sent out a team using a strategy designed to ensure we got hammered, just so the board were left with no option but to let him buy players. The result was Arteta, Mert and Ben - Happy days :)
