Is racism a generational thing?

Is racism or more accurately racist views associated with generation or age group?

The two people arrested at Anfield and OT were aged 59 and 57 respectively! And yesterday an old scousers fan (from liverpool!) came on radio 5live duirng the Terry suspension phone in. He said he was around at the time of Tommy Smith and Emlyn Huhes and how at that time men were men and every one (fans) was calling black players "black so and so " and there was nothing said about it. He said he beileved that Terry said the words but that it was hardly an offence and black people should put up with it!!!

My question: Can you say that in general old people are more racist (from today's viewpoint) than the younger generation? Are your parents, grandparents, uncles or aunts more racist in outlook than you? Would it explain the actions of Dalglish in supporting Suarez for his racist actions against Evra without any regard for black fans?

PS: By the way, congratulations to the United fans who reported the racist at OT. Rather than put up with supporting one of their own like the scousers would have done, they made sure he was identfied and punished. How refreshingly diffrent to the scousers whose manager not only not condemn any racism but had T-shirts worn to support racist actions!
 
Personally I don't think calling a black person black is racist and you can see what age I am. It's like calling a fat person fat and there can be many more examples.

Butttt.. it also depends on tone of voice, if you yell it with anger then I think you can probably say it's racist.
 
The answer to your question may be difficult to define - I don't think that there will be honest statistics to give that answer.
My personal experience is that there is a mixed reaction to our multi cultural society. Unfortunately when things go wrong racism or the ' race ' card rears its' ugly head by the extreme members of each group. Both are wrong.
The worlds people needs to learn to live in harmony with each other, still allowing for cultural differences - without the need for bigotry or a desire to kill. I know that my ideas will not happen very soon, but until mankind starts to take social harmony seriously it will continue to travel a path of self destruction.<peacedove>

There is nothing wrong with saying black player, black postman or black copper.

But would you call the same people in an argument (like Suarez and Terry "allegedly" did) you are a black c*** or a black sh**? Would you find that acceptable?

Yes, I see where you are coming from.

I think that the previous generation was more racist than the current one and the one before that and so on. When you look at the history of this country and its imperial and colonial past you can find some of the reasons. When you colonise another country and its people and say you are the masters, does it come as a surprise that some people in this country think that they are "superior" to others?

Despite my previous reply...
To paraphrase .. There's probably nothing 'wrong' in calling somebody a cnut - but it is wrong to call somebody a black / white cnut. In my mind it is made a lot worse when a persons colour is included. I have no real problem in being insulted ( especially on GC ) but I would take exception to the colour of my skin being included in that insult. It stops being a mere insult, but a case of racism.

by calling in an argument...you are a black, white, yellow, or brown cnut/sh*t you are somehow trying to imply that they are inferior to you by being that colour, otherwise why would you bring it up in an argument?

This is something that people who have not been at the receiving end find extremely difficult to understand.

In the same way that we have had millions of posts from scousers fans saying "Ah but the word is common place in Urugay and in south America. Even his wife calls him that". How do you explain to people that racist language is all about context?
 
Racism (from a minority perspective) is never as straight forward as it is often defined

I have known people who use politically incorrect terminology yet i dont believe are racist. They use it due to age, even culture in my experience but it is done 'matter of factly' not racially. For example I know of a people who use the word paki when talking about south asians, yet they do so as a way of identifying the person and not to be racist


I also know black/asian people with white partners. Yet they are what I would call racist. A friends white wife is always saying 'paki's' etc in negative contexts which I believe are due to her insecurities.
Also I think there was a study done that racist (men mainly) will shag black women as a way of showing dominance. Now at first it seems ludicrous that a racist man would contemplate this and that this would be racist. but its there

As for football I think that there is so much nationalism in football that racism is inevitable. You can have 2 brothers who support differing teams (in stoke I know twins 1 a vale fan the other a stoke fan) who 'hate' each other over football. so its kind of inevitable to me

I nearly included The Great British Empire in my first reply... You have a good point.
I think real racism in England started in the 60 s when there was a lot of immigration. These people came, primarily looking for work ( unlike the current economic migrants ) These immigrants took jobs and opened shops on the corners of our streets and were not afraid to work - especially doing some unglamorous jobs. A certain level of resentment prevailed, even by those who chose not to work. This resentment was probably at the core of early racism in England. I am not sure that it applies as a reason for modern day racism - I think that deep down your suggestion that " we are better than you " is the real reason.

Ditto, my kids are half Asian and i have taken the power away from the word "chinky" they will laugh if called it ...... Racism towards Chinese people is still widely tolerated, they just don`t care ...

You not with her anymore then? I find, with Chinese women they are either rough or stunning (very much like Indians actually). Also when they go past their use by date they turn into ugly monsters no matter what.

There is a chinese takeaway near me, the owner when you go in has a heavy accent

I met him in town a while back and the coont spoke better english than most white peopke I know (is that racist) <laugh>
He actually puts it on for the customers
