No, but it's not taboo in all countries. Would you consider describing someone's hair colour in an argument as offensive? no. "**** off, blondie" would hardly raise any eyebrows would it, and neither does negro in Uruguay. Hence many Uruguayans (including the captain) expressing their disbelief at the FA's decision. Suarez has been in Europe for over 5 years. Are you telling me he regularly calls his black team mates negro? Do you think Glen Johnson would be ok with that? Perhaps he used it innocently in Holland when he first arrived there but he will have soon been pulled up on it.

The thing is I don't know if he did. I really don't think he's that clever. He lived in Holland for most the time and would never have had a heated argument in Spanish with a black player, so I'm not sure if he'd have ever been in a similar position in which to realise the error and the fact it doesnt translate well. The word 'Negro' means black in latin America and he admitted calling Evra 'Negrito'. Adding "ito" to the term "negro". It can indicate affection, especially when said between people who know each other intimately. But it can also be used to belittle. As the word was used in battle/contest it was taken as racist as he intended it to be.
