My own little world
Anyone else worried at the lack of progress in Colo's contract?

The lad turned 30 the other day and is on around £70k a week, above our wage cap. We all saw what the mob did with Nolan and Barton regarding their contracts....get rid.

I am concerned that laurel and hardy will look at him and say he's not getting any younger, he isn't going to get any quicker, lets save/make a bit of ££ and get rid.

Wouldn't surprise me one little bit.

Sign him up! Danny Guthrie too.

:D

He's not out of contract until the end of next season so I can see why there is no rush at present.

I'm quite confident that he'll sign a new deal though by the end of this season.

We'll wait and see, but I remain confident. The difference between him and Nolan is that he is QUALITY and has at least a couple years left at top level.

I think Pardew values his leadership and defensive qualities too much to just try and drain a few £ out of selling him!

We're offering him a payrise as captain, can't see him not signing, especially when he loves us and his daughter is a Geordie according to him.

I think it's more to do with him being captain. Also with Smith being the highest earner on 60k a week, he's probably not on as much as we'd think.

I dont want to ruin our newly formed agreeable nature, but Colo is our highest earner right here right now. He was on £75k a week before we were relegated, I didnt see anything to suggest he had took a wage cut since then, he will have to agree to a £50k a week deal if he were to stay.

Its just whether the mob decide he is worth cashing in on now before he becomes worthless.......I have genuine concerns that this is their attitude towards players of his age.

Part of me is thinking there would be no way no contract would be offered as he's one of our best players and it would be difficult to find a defender as good as him to come and play for us.

Then I remember who's in charge and realise that literally anything can happen, the whole core of the squad could be gone this time next year! I'm just going to enjoy him whilst he's here and hope for the best <laugh>

It would seem we were both wrong, after some digging it turns out he's on 80k a week. It has been reported that we're going to offer a wage increase though to keep him here.

£80,000 a week?! No wonder he loves it here!

Considering that his game isn't based on pace, he should still be a decent player into his early-mid thirties. No re-sale value, but the money we could make from him staying in the team (MAYBE getting into Europe, higher league finish etc) would outweigh that.

Where is this figure of 70k per week coming from? Thin air. At the end of the day, if he leaves, we will bring in a capable replacement. I've given up on hoping we will keep our best players now, just enjoy them while they're here and trust Graham Carr to find good replacements if/when they leave.

£75k - £80k same ball park.

There is no way in a month of Sundays (what does this saying even mean?) would Ashley offer him an increased wage. No way whatsoever!

Whilst I see where you're coming from with the Ashley statement, I'm inclined to disagree to a point. If we tie him down to a long term contract on higher wages, the success he could bring to the club could make MA more money in the long term, which is what Ashley is in it for. We all know Ashley is a tight bastard, but things like this would make sense to him, especially with his new found happiness at our success.
