I think that the only reason behind Ashley's backing of the Cisse transfer is down to how well we have done this season. Basically, as we are joint 5th half way through the season, it more or less guarantee's a high finish meaning X amount of extra revenue than we obviously would of got from finishing in a lower position, which was the risk at the start of the season when Ashley couldn't guarantee his money back.

If true this is not necessarily a bad thing, depending on Ashley's greed, as we may not have to sell a player to get the transfer money back.

Just a thought, I may be wrong

    Fair point.

Could be the prospect of Europe that swayed him. If we do get a CB I fell that is a very real possibility. In fact, it is anyway provided we don't get another CB injury!

It is a romantic view (and one I have adopted) but I will wait until the end of January.

    This.

Ashley is both a pr disaster and a clever businessman, hopefully he will remain the latter for this window atleast.

    He loves a good gamble.

7.5m down on Newcastle to get into Europe. Odds of about 4/1 with added advertising for his company.

I also think we've only just been made aware that he's available though.

Freiburg seem set on relgation this year by the looks of things and as soon as they found a replacement, they were able to sell...

Remember the whole news about how the club has had a transfer rethink after certain names became available by clubs/agents on offer and we already know a bid was rejected in the summer.

I do think we'd have spent less money though if we were just in a mediocre mid table situation. We actually have somethign to play for currently though.

Freiburg probably figured they'd get more for him whilst still in the Bunderslige rather than after being relegated in the summer.

Also isn't spending money to maintain a high league position/ avoid relegation how most clubs (without a sugar daddy) work? Not much point in spending too much money if you're just gonna float around 8th-12th (Everton, Fulham etc). Certainly not at this stage in the season.

PS. Motd showed Ashley celebrating our goal against QPR, it is also possible he's quite happy that we're doing well at the mo and wants us to maintain or level of improvement. Especially as the players don't spend their time mouthing off about him anymore!

I think the reason we bought Cisse is two fold....

1.) bring in a quality striker to help us push for Europe

2.) He's Ba's mate! why would Ba want to leave if he is here? master stroke by Ashley & Co - 2 birds with one stone. release clause can **** off now! Bas here to stay!

hopefully hes here to stay but i am afraid money talks doesnt it, and as good as ba is he is injury prone meaning he may wanna cash in ??on the other hand teams no he is injury prone so why would they wanna take a gamble for another michael owen if he turned for the worst

Either that was a long time ago or Ashley can now see into the future!

Since when was Ba injury prone? Has he been consistently injured since he came into English football? I thought he had a deteriorating knee problem which would shorten his career not make him injury prone.

Kinda the point I was going to make. People keep banging on about him having dodgy knees, but he's been battered about in a lot of games, limped off but every week he's come back and been either in the starting 11 or on the bench. He's played more games than Shola.

He passed a medical, as did Ben Arfa when people were talking about his fitness problems as did Marveaux. Granted Marveaux is currently out, but its nowt to do with the supposed reasons he failed a medical at the bin dippers. The fact Maiga failed a medical I think is just a smokescreen for the club pulling out, as they've always had Cisse as their No1 target, and they've obviously found out that a deal could likely happen so they pulled the plug on Maiga. Its the easiest explanation where they wouldn't have to come out and explain themselves further.

Read something on a forum today saying that Carr had been watching Tiote for 4 years before he came to the Toon. This guy obviously does his homework, knows what he is looking for and has a very clear remit from whoever he is working for, and I have to say we are reaping the rewards now.

Cisse, Ba, HBA, Santon, Marveaux, Abeid, Cabaye, Tiote all for under £30 million, that is decent business, given the fact that we could easily double that if they were all sold tomorrow (Cisse aside as he's unproven really).

Exciting times ahead, I'll be happy if we finish this window exactly as we are now, with no-one going out. We've brought a striker in which we badly needed I feel, a backup CB would be handy though.

I think we have a real good chance of finishing top 6 now. I think its way to early to even be thinking about CL spots just yet, but we have a good run of fixtures coming up, which if we can replicate the form we showed in the early part of the season are more than winnable. If we can keep within sniffing distance then it might just put a bit of pressure on.

I'll certainly be gutted if we finish behind the likes of Villa and Stoke!
