And on the financial side of things that lots of our fans keep harping on about (we are the 5th richest etc) Celtic are owned by Billionaires too. Unfortunately for us our billionaire died so we rely on his family not deciding to sell. Celtic are not in that boat and to add to their billionaire owners' wealth is the fact that they will make lots lots more than us in terms of merchandising due to their brandname and global support.

Lets keep it realistic, lets not be naive and lets not criticise Celtic because the SPL is poor. Lets just be hopeful that we can get the player without looking like fools when we type into our forums ;)

Guys and gals........The content of this thread has slowly gone down hill.......I don't care who started it.......but be warned if the content does not improve it will be be taken out..........BT

A lot of Southampton fans disappoint me with this naive SPL commentary.

Yes the SPL is a poor league. Yes Celtic and Rangers would not be guaranteed to win the English Championship, but then no team coming down from the EPL are guaranteed promotion first time. There is not much gap between bottom half of the EPL and the top half of the Championship. We are lucky we are up there and should make sure we take the opportunity because if we don't I wouldn't lay money we will just do it next year instead!!!!

What you guys (and yes I am a Saints fan) need to wake up to is that Southampton are a much smaller club than Celtic. In terms of the brand, the history, the romance. Doesn't matter the quality of the SPL. Celtic are one of the most famous clubs in the world, a recognised Brand and therefore like any club of their Ilk they will be more attractive than Saints in those terms. Celtic are a global brand. Probably 10x (or more) a worldwide fanbase than we could hope for even if we reached a european qualification level.

The only hope we have (and I think it is a good chance) is that Hooper wants to play for Adkins. He won't be coming here even if we were in the EPL because Cortese has ambitions of progression. It will be purely a personal preference and nothing to do with what Southampton can offer versus Celtic.

As for the 35m? Not a chance. That is more likely Lennon trying to make sure his opinion is known before his board make any decision. If Hooper is sold for 10m then Lennon is in the clear with the fans.

Lets hope we get him but lets not harp on about the SPL. We are talking about the attraction of playing for one of the most famous football clubs in the world here yet some Saints fans are suggesting any team that is in the EPL is more attractive. Just isn't the case.

AC

As you say, I think only the naive believe that Celtic are a so-so club. But they play in a relatively so-so league. In all honesty, the best thing for Celtic, and Rangers, from a financial perspective, would be to join the English leagues. But that can hardly happen because civil war would break out, north of the border. It's up to Scotland to bring their quality upto to the mark, and therefore give Celtic and Rangers the better foundation of being the cream at the top. It's an odd paradox that a football club can rightly call themselves one of the most famous in the world, yet only be of high Championship/low Premier League quality. And it will probably only get worse for them.

This thread has generally been pretty good..just different opinions. Celtic are a big club worldwide with big earning potential, but have little competition. This is why Swansea and Cardiff didn't join the LOW. They would have been in the same boat as Celtic and Rangers, but without the earning potential.

I think we should be happy with lennons comments if he wasnt worried at all he would have just said he isnt going anywhere for any price and southampton are wasting their time, like the hull board said. I think hes trying to make sure the fans know that he doesnt want to sell hooper so if he does go he wont get the blame, maybe thats me just being to optimistic. About celtic vs southampton only a moron would say that the pedigree/size of celtic isnt massively massively larger than us. However the prem is an alluring prospect perhaps more so than early stages of europe and also working with an old manager is aswell. I think the transfer is in the balance but lets not wind up the celtic fans we would be the same if clubs came in for lallana/lambert, of course they're going to defend their club and country.

"Lets not wind them up"

???

They came onto our board spewing ignorance. I see no reason why we shouldn't respond in kind.

Fair enough but i've seen a few comments which were always just going to descend this thread into a name calling contest. Of course you can do what you want but I just mean think about if clubs came in for our players and how we would react, we've been their enough before!

If you're going to reply, then keep the tone of your reply at the level of reason and without insult. You can then hardly be accused of winding them up. It's isn't a case of they started it, because that's a child's mentality and reaction, and hopefully, we are all adults here.

If I wanted adult level conversation, I wouldn't go on the internet to find it.

I thought that all of this started when one of their threads was brought over here and continued.

Mainly I feel, because we don't(some on here) recognise how big Celtic actually are. Yes a big fish in a small pond but that is hardly their fault just their problem. The thought of having a British League has been brokered on several occasions and will maybe one day happen. Until then we will always have this argument but please let us do the arguing with a modicum of respect.

As for the Lennon article, I myself think that the comment was more tongue in cheek than a price actually expected. Hoops is scoring in what may be a lower standard than the one in which are playing. Certainly not one significantly higher. Carroll and Torres were bought because of what they had done in the Premiership.

I think Lennon was actually trying to get as much as he could/can for HIS player in the same way we have done and do now with the likes of AOC and JP.

I gave up reading after 4 page of tripe.

Well done Beddytare for the warning.

On topic. Why are some Saints fans being arrogant about this? Hooper is currently playing in front of 60k+ every home game and that is a big pull for a player. He is scoring goals and winning most matches and rapidly becoming a huge hero. We can offer him more money and potentially a chance to play in the EPL... maybe.

I can't even contemplating disrespecting a club like Celtic who are HUGE. It is not there fault that currently the SPL is not at it's greatest in quality, and their game may be struggling at the moment.

As for Lennon, if I was a Celtic fan I'd be delighted with what he's doing. He's trying to stuff up our chances of getting one of his best players. Fair enough. If he succeeds in that, their fans will love him even more.

It's quite funny to see fans of a club like Southampton taking some kind of superior attitude to anyone. Rupert Murdoch and Sky really have done a magnificant job on some people.

Glad it gave you some amusement, but you mistake superior attitude with the current run of enthusiasm, if you are a Celtic fan, thanks for Jos Hooiveld, a very timely gift.

Not really. They could sell our club if they wanted to,Cortese would find another suitable owner.

Indeed true however Celtic are in an even better situation being owned by a few people who's fortune is more than our family's!!!! If the Liebherr's did decide to sell then yes Cortese would find new investment however Celtic are now owned by people who want to own that club and are financially able to fend off any bid they want. whether they do or not may well depend on whether they think a bid for Hooper is of such a value that they could find a replacement for the less money. I think it would as Adkins will value Hooper more than most other suitors because of his knowledge with him.

I was just saying the 'we're the 5th richest club in Britain' argument will not rub with Celtic fans. they are arguably richer if people think how much an owner is worth makes a club rich.

I prefer to think of Saints as comfortably off. Our owners money means very little to us apart from the fact that there is no pressing need for them to realise their investment...

Let's have a little reminder. Because I think people are forgetting: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/southampton/9269293.stm

If you're a Celtic fan, watch the top video. If you're a Saints fan, you'll probably go for the full 24 minutes, just to top up. :D
