After the game yesterday I took a look at the League table and for the first time I looked at the teams above us before those below us. Newcastle are playing QPR today and I am actually hoping for a QPR win as Newcastle are catchable. No way we can break into the top 6, but 7th is there for the taking :)

My next thing WAS to look at the points total of the 18th team :)

On another note, Obviously top 4 get CL football. Is it the next 2 in the Europa plus the winners of both cups?

If both teams in the FA cup final have already qualified for Europe then does that place go the the 7th PL team?

With Cardiff and Palace battling it out for a League cup final place I guess one of those will get a Europa place as both Liverpool and Man City are likely to have already qualified for Europe or does that place then go to the 8th PL team?

Probably getting ahead of myself but you never know :)

A European night at Carrow Road would be the highlight of my life so far.

Yeah, crystal palace or cardiff will get one, so if both fa cup finalists qualify for the champions league, 5th and 6th will qualify for the europa league. There's also fair play, the country with the best fair play gets an extra place which goes to the team with the best record. Although this probably won't happen this season as the refs appear to happy to give out yellow and red cards!

I am going to disagree Kenny, would rather see Newcastle win.
The bottom line is, although we are in a great position now, we are not safe from relegation until it is mathematically impossible to do so. Until that time I want all teams below us to drop as many points as possible in the coming weeks/months <ok>

Completely agree, although a great win, full of grit, determination, two fantastic goals, it would have been very easy for the result to have gone the other way. We aren't safe yet, I am confident we will be: come on the toon, the sooner we get to safety the better, and teams doing badly will obviously help. We can then play with more confidence and assurance for the last few games of the season, and then aim for the stars

7th for the taking: come on that has to be a sarcastic comment.

I know that Mathmatically it could still be us, but lets face it Thai, we aren't going down. Absolutely no way. 17 games in which to get 12 points and that is assumeing that all bar 2 of those below us do better than that despite most of them showing no sign of putting a run together. It is just not going to happen. We would need to lose pretty much every game now to go down.

    No Chance.

Yesterday's result was massive. It was probably the one that ensured safety.

It is no time to be complacent, Lambert will ensure that does not happen, but are just about there. We have even opened up a little buffer to 10th place. It is also nice to see a little gap opening between 15th and 16th with us well clear. Come the end of the season it will be 3 from the current bottom 5.

Why not? Who else is going to take it? Newcastle started brilliantly but have dropped a lot of points lately. only a 5pt gap. We seem to be doing what we have in previous season under Lambert and are getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses.

However, if Newcastle win today I would amend my comment to '8th, there fore the taking' :)

With Colin gone and Barton possibly following I don't have any real dislike for them. I think Mark Hughes will keep them up.

Certainly agree with the bits in red. Combining yesterday's result and the QPR one the team have given themselves a fantastic chance of survival and I am sure we will get more than 12 points from now until the end of the season - all the same I remain cautious after what happened in the 90's when we were riding high in the PL and it all went so horribly wrong! Yes, the circumstances were very different then and are unlikely to repeat themselves but........

Shhhhh, we know you're right, but whisper it.

PS: I wasn't born in 1990, it was Feb 89, if that's any consolation?! ;-)

A heavy defeat would hopefully cause more panic buying like back in august.

I don't see how they think buying the players they are will work. It hasn't worked so far so it may not this time. I don't want players like Alex at carrow road.

As for european football at carrow road, I'm another one who is too young to remember those great days.

I will have a bet with you that in addition to the top six, everton, sunderland, stoke, villa will finish above us. That still makes us in 11th, i can't beleive we are having this discussion, what i mean is, it's great to be thinking about how high we'll finish, rather than will we stay up

Toon win anyday over a kooo-peee-aaargh win. If you qpr won that would give them a major boost. You want the teams below us to lose as many points as possible, especially when we pick up 3! Hoping for newcastle, arsenal and man city wins over the next 2 days. 4 wins required out of 17 to get to 40, seems reasonable enough but until we get past that point then we are not safe by any means.

    As for europe.

    1st-4th = CL
    5th+LC+FAC+FPL = EL
