Being down under, it's 8.22am here on Thursday 12th. Usually I get yesterdays UK news at this time.
Can't find any on line reference on Chelsea site, BBC, or anywhere else re Gary Cahill signing for us.
Has it happened , will it happen, is it off ??
Hope you can clue me in.

Hasn't happened mate, false alarm <ok>.

Some sources say it will happen in the next 24 hours but I won't believe it 'til I see it!

Thanks Drogs, as you know, not convinced he's a great signing anyway, but nice to be in the loop.

I know what you mean, but £7m is a good price for the age he's at as I believe 26 is the age defenders start to peak and he certainly has performed well with JT at international level!

Can't argue with that. Just concerned that if it's a money thing , his attitude is all wrong.

If you didn't sign players who were concerned with money though you'd never sign anyone!! We just have to accept footballs / agents are greedy and let the club deal with it. As fans we can only really judge the players on how they perform on the pitch. It wasn't so long ago Lamps and Terry 'held the club to ransom' to get better deals and they are CFC legends. See also Rooney at United, Gerrard and Liverpool etc

I read some interesting stuff yesterday in The Times that Harry Redknapp was casting his eyes over the situation, where he was looking to see if we couldn't get him to agree to a pay deal, he'd get him on a free in the summer and use the unpaid transfer to turn into a wage top up!

You are absolutely right, they are all at it. However.........Lamps, Terry, Rooney and Gerard have the runs on the board. They are proven stars. This guy is not in that league yet, and may never be so. My problem is .. if he's up himself at this stage, he's trouble waiting to happen if he ever becomes REALLY good. We need more of that like a hole in the head.

I read Chelsea are saying they will pull the plug if the deal isn't done today (12/01).

I'm glad to see that Chelsea aren't just giving in to his demands. We've done that too often in the past. I think he's playing on the fact that the transfer fee was quite low.
I like him as a player but if doubling his money ain't enough then maybe we should look elsewhere.

The fee is low for a player of his ability but high given he will be on a free in 5 months.

True but everyone will be after him then. We need a central defender now.

I don't think it's high. Like Blue said, everyone will be after him and the main point being we need a quick fix defender now. Any others of his ability or higher will cost us dearly and they'll most likely be cup tied <ok>.

Saying that, take it or leave it Gary. AVB said today he hopes to wrap it up this week, I do hope we don't give in to pure greed.

My thoughts exactly Drog. £7m for an England player? You just have to look at the fees Liverpool have paid for English players. £20m for Henderson, £15m for Downing, £35m for Carroll.
    Cahill is an absolute bargain.

Precisely <ok>. If he flops, at least he won't have cost us a hefty sum!

I'm not saying the fee is high as such but not cheap enough that the player should think he should be entitled to silly wages.

If he was a free then maybe pay him more than he's worth but 7 mill is still 7 mill.

Also true, I think we should give him a clause based on goals/appearances/clean sheets that his wage can increase in the summer if he manages to perform well.

I'm not saying that we should pay him silly wages but £7m is peanuts for a player of that calibre.

might be the reason cahill wants big money - he knows that if he waits till the summer he will get several offers before the euros and might even go to the euros as a free agent - if he has a decent euros he can demand huge money as there will be no transfer fee - possibly using this to get a bigger wage
