firstly im not going to knock him , thats not the point of this thread
but im a little confused as to what kind of striker NB is looking for because according to Simpsons agent ....


"Jay has come back to Hull and Nick Barmby is keen to take a fresh look at him," said Uben Gray, Simpson's agent.
"He is a like-minded player to Nick when he played, in that he liked to drop deep and look for the ball there.
"Jay is in a similar mould and Nick thinks he can do a job for him. (HDM)


Now this is my confusion , do we need our spearhead striker to have is back to goal coming towards the pocket looking for the ball ?
If we do that we will be looking at narrowing our play and screwing everything up.

Myself i would have thought thats exactly what we dont want .
It might be boring but we need a striker that will attack the space behind the CBs in the 6yrd box , gambling on passes and crosses from out wide ... fanciful thoughts ?
I dunno but is this more smokescreens
 
Don't think Jay was given a chance by NP. He was dropped as soon as Fryatt and McClean came in when to be honest he was starting to bag a few goals. He was also starting to work well with Stewart and I would love to see the pair of them in the starting lineup again together
 
it's natural a new manager will want to give a player overlooked by the previous boss a fresh chance. Plus if we have to pay Bullard the compensation then Simpson won't cost owt. NP "didn't rate" Simpson, but we do know he's capable.
 
I can see the sense in NB wanting to have another look at JS, especially if Dickhead wins his appeal.

My concern is that IMO we need a 1 in 2 / 2.5 striker if we are going to push on for promotion. I just can't seen JS ever being that, he's more 1 in 6.

In conclusion; fair enough that he's been given another chance but I hope it doesn't mean we've stopped looking to bring in another centre forward.

His actual record is 1 in 5, I think he'll do ok. But I do think we need a decent striker, we haven't really addressed for the last 4/5 years.
 
The thing I like about Simpson is that he can do his bit 'in the pocket' and play a bit, but as soon as someone hits the byline and gets a ball in he will always be there for the tap in, it's a great habit and the same certainly can't be said for Fryatt or McLean.

But as the OP says, I can't understand what NB does want to spearhead the attack. He thinks Sharp needs other players around him so isn't a target, but Simpson (who surely has a similar problem) is a candidate. I don't get it. There must be some financial motivation to all of this. You have to think if we had more money to spend, we would go for someone really good.
 
I think NB sees Simpson as a versitile player, he can play either as a wing forward (the same position that McClean is playing) or up top. For me the question is who do you prefer, McClean or Simpson?

Personally I would like to see us drop to 4-4-2, against Derby Evans and Koren barely did anything, so I would like to see McKenna and Koren at CM, Bradey and Stewart on the flanks and Simpson and Fryatt up top. Would give us defensive cover in McKenna, vision in Koren (and get him on the ball more), pace and trickery wide and two forwards who can both hustle for the ball. My main concern on Saturday was that when Fryatt was having to go wide to chase down the ball, or look for a clever flick, there was no one near him or supporting for him (which is what wing forwards need to do).

With Simpson coming back, and Josh King apparently close to signing, I think McClean will be off soon.

Welcome back Simmo, now knock a few in for us!!!!

I think we have been blessed with some good strikers in the last 4/5 years.

I think its more about partnerships. Up until us signing Campbell we didn't have much bite in front of goal during our promotion season but his arrival gave us some balance up top.

All for seeing Simpson come back to show what he can do, if he wants to that is!
 
I don't think we need to over analyse.

Nick is just giving certain players who are presently out of the picture (for whatever reason) another go (if) he thinks there's something there still.

NB has adapted our style of play somewhat since Nige-dull Pearson left. It may suit Simpson to be in a more attacking/passing team. I would like to see Koren in the centre of the park, trying a few raking through balls to JS and see what his pace can do.

Although that is totally the opposite to what his agent has just said of course!

Also, I am quite looking forward to seeing big Oli back in the team if it happens. I know he is short of fitness, but eventually he will come good this season.

Agreed ^^^^^^^^^ this. NP dropped him just as Simmo was starting to perform. How typical of NP was that.
But now a new manager for Simmo to work with. Give him a chance.

Premier league was a struggle for goals as has last season and this. Our promo season aside, a genuine goal every other game striker has been an issue. I like Fryatt, but he does waste/over complicate a lot of chances.

We need a striker here who is going to hit a purple patch between now and the end of the season, and create genuine competition, so everyone knows they've got to be on top form to stay in the starting 11.

With another winger looking to be brought in I wonder if we will see Stewart pushed back up front? Or will he be leaving?

Is the other winger we're bringing in more of a replacement for Brady? Still to sort out an extension and if we can't get him in permanently (which if Man U want him we won't) then for next season we've got Stewart and Garcia as natural wingers. Both of them are coming back from long term injuries, and you always want 3 wingers in the squad anyway.
 
I was ridiculed for supporting Simmo when he was being slated left right and centre. Suddenly everyone is saying 'I always thought he was unfairly treated by NP' and 'I think he'll do well for us' and 'We know he's got the quality'.

How very convenient <laugh>

It is convenient that Jay has returned to the club after we have failed to score in the last 3 games but it may be the bit of luck Simmo needs and if he takes his opportunity his career could get back on track! Funny how football pans out as I don't think he would have had a sniff if we hadn't lost the last 3 games

You can't have been ridiculed too much because I was defending him at the same time based on having seen him fairly regularly for QPR the season before and don't remember any ridiculing.
 
i think simpson could prove useful, i dont think were desperate for somebody to come in and score 10-15 goals....
fryatt will still bag a few in before the end of the season., as im sure koren/stewart will too..
we just need somebody to take some off the pressure off fryatt when its not happening, like the last couple.. and stick 5 or 6 in themselves...im sure simpson can do this and hopefully this king may be able too also.
 
I think honestly that Simpson just wants to go to Larn daaaan.

I reckon he is back as we have no ther immedate options, and he is free.

I'm sure we'd buy someone if we could find someone decent, he wanted to come, and if we had the cash. Not much about that fits all 3 criterea.

Think this is just a plan B, rather than NB really rating him and yearning for his return.
