I said it on the Rumours thread last week - if West Ham are chasing strikers, which very much appears to be the case, I think it's more down to the ego's of Big Sam and/or the owners, rather than an actual need for them.

I may be wrong, but I thought that West Ham were in money troubles and had shloads of debt? Or are they relying on parachute payments to get them back up before they have to worry about that sort of thing?
I hope they go on to take the points, I love it when people take points off Utd at OT (there are plastic Mancs in the family, I am sorry to say).
I think you are right about the money troubles and the debt, and I suspect you're right about relying on the parachute payments. I'd expect them to hit serious problems if they don't get promoted in the near future - especialy if they're the cash about in the meantime. But then again, I don't expect them not to get promoted.
