I think even Guly would acknowledge he didn't have his best game against Pompey, but I thought it was a cheap shot to accuse him of generous defending, as said by presenter Jake Humphrey. When you guard a post area at a corner, you guard the post area. The first ball was initially won by Pompey's Thorne, despite plenty of defenders jumping for the ball, and then it went back across goal into an area where Guly could have just stayed at the post, because the ball was well enough away from him, for him to choose to do that. Instead, he belatedly elected to come to the ball. Too late, as it happened, and Ward got a free header. Yes, you can blame Guly. I blamed the defence as a whole, and Guly for his indecision only. Not the other cheap shot of saying he was 6'6" [Alan Shearer's measure] and basically not competing, because he was scared of the physical battle. Plus, Humphrey ought to keep his observations about professional football to himself, because he clearly didn't have any idea of what he was talking about. Thankfully, Claridge redressed a bit of the balance there.
In all honesty, I didn't think I would end up respecting the much more even handed analysis of Steve Claridge, over the clearly contemptuous post match comments by Shearer, and the star-struck Jake.
