Let's all be honest in that we have known for a long time now that Nicky wanted to move on and it appears that the time has arrived. How on earth our top brass can look us in the eye and tell us that this is the best for everybody concerned when we had a clear opportunity to get rid of him in the summer. Why do the decison makers at Ashton Gate consistently make fools of themselves by making stupid decisions. It was so clear at the end of last season that he did not want to sign, despite the fact that he was paid our money to cover his self-inflicted injury, and he should have been sent packing with a kick in the backside and our best wishes. Loyalty is a rare commodity these days and I''m afraid to tell you all that Nicky has been guilty of lack thereof for a long time so as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for visiting Ashton Gate along your way but it's so sad that a seemingly nice young man like yourself has become just an average footballer who thinks that the grass is always greener elsewhere. Hope it works out for you but it's time to get on your bike and disappear. Hope it doesn't appear that I'm angry about the total lack of commitment by all concerned in this affair - oh yes I am!!!!!
We've got enough firepower up front for Maynard's absence to not matter, but only if Stead and Pitman step up and take this opportunity. McInnes will also buy a strong centre-forward type with luck and I can see us not missing him too much. The only issue I can see is whether we'll get anything substantial for him. Fulham may pay up to £5M, but I still think it's not enough for a guy with enough quality. He's probably not peaked yet so he's definitely worth at least £8M in the current market. I'd love to see us arrange some sort of swap deal for a strong centre-forward or a solid defender as someone of proven quality in that position could be worth his weight in gold for us. To answer the question, I think we waited because we were naive in that he would eventually sign. The contract dragged out far too long for it to ever become viable this season and if anything I think Millen has a lot to answer for in regards to how this was played out. This is pure speculation but I can imagine that McInnes wanted to make Maynard a part of the team to get him to sign, but I can imagine that he's pushed the initiative to give Maynard the ultimatum he should have received many months ago.
Totally with you on this one EnderMB. At AG we have had great success in failing and this only highlights our inability to do the right business at the right time. I know DM will change that philosophy and make us a better team because despite his efforts to convince Nicky to stay the lad felt he knew better. Another question that I have after reviewing this contract with Nicky is what the heck is the nodding dog CS still employed? Hope I haven't been too cruel - nope!
Quite agree with the OP, feel so let down after all the support this bloke got from the club and fans for his injury last year. Total lack of respect or allegiance from another Jermaine Beckford type of player. Not good enough to be a starter in the EPL, because their are foreign players so much better, thats the sad fact. He is a wonder goal scorer that wont be given any type of room against top tier teams to score goals like that. I hope Albert Adomah sticks around for another year at least to see the type of mistake he could make. I know it was just a WUM from the saints fan, but he is right, be lucky to get two million for him come January.
Nicky has hedged his bets (as is his right) and the board, rather than be men about it and force his hand for a decision a year ago when they knew that he was going to play this game, have just pandered to him. I can't blame the player as we'd all do it if we could to keep our options open and get more dough. Yes this is a brutal assessment but loyalty really no longer exists when money is involved, and especially when agents are also bad mouthing existing clubs. Despite all this I've absolutely nothing against Maynard and I wish him well. He'll be a millionaire in no time (if he isn't already) even if he goes to a Wolves/Fulham/Wigan, but I still don't believe he's half as good as some people think he is and I'll wager here and now that he'll never play for a major club, or ever make a massive impact in the Prem because he just won't. I see him as an underachiever so maybe Leicester would like to bid for him again ?
Well said Invermere Mike. The apparent lack of action by the board during the last year speaks volumes. Yet should those of us with a lifetime of following City be surprised. The answer is a resounding NO! We have been, as the Gasheads frequently remind us, a buying club and not a selling club. My memory may have forgotten a few but apart from Chris Garland, Dave Cotterill and Leroy Lita, in all the big money deals at Ashton Gate, cash has flowed out to other clubs on players who rarely, if ever, are sold for even a break even situation. I have a feeling that NM will sit it out until the summer and thus leave for nothing. Deficit £2.25 million. Even if we do get a buyer that is acceptable to NM, then I presume that from any money we get over the purchase price, a good sized chunk will go to Crewe Alexandra! Maybe if I get some time soon, Iâll do a list of the home grown talent that weâve given away for peanuts. Going way way back, Roy Bentley, Alan Williams, Shadow Williams, Paul Mardon, Matt Hill etc, etc. Thank goodness Harry Dolman held on to Big John Atyeo! Like contributors on other threads, one wonders if the Maynard factor is now having a detrimental effect on our very recent performances. He obviously does not have his heart in it so leave him out of the side and put Steady and Brett up front against Coventry.
1 thing you have to remember is it was Sven who was after Maynard. I think Nigel will be interested as a good striker is avalible but weather he makes a bid remains to be seen
Quote from our chairman today as you don't seem to believe us! "It's not a question of us just selling him, Nicky will have a strong say in it as well. In the summer we only received bids from one club - and it was a club Nicky made clear he wouldn't want to join." Its not sinking in at all is it?
Im not wumming. Im just saying dont think we will defo be interested. I think we cost you in the summer as we made Maynards price tag go so high all the other clubs wasnt interested in paying that price and i dont blame them. Know the money will be more sensible i think there will be alot of interest Regarding us maybe he didnt want to play for Sven. With Nigel back he may be interested this time
Despite my 'talking him up' at the time PF I would have taken Anything above £5m like a shot myself. I could also see this day coming a mile off, I will also say he will most likely sit on his contract and walk in the summer.
i think this is more del boy going right u not gonna sign the contract i don't want players who won't commit themselves to this club
One positive is that the club seem to be handling this extremely well at the moment. This leads me to believe that those in charge haven't lost respect for him and are actively going to help him find the best club he can get. Have we actually broke off contract negotiations with Nicky? If we haven't formally dropped the contract then perhaps we're holding out with Nicky to see if a Premier League club comes in with a bid? If no one does then perhaps Maynard will eventually sign, although personally I still wouldn't want him signing for us after so long.
I think after all this time his commitment to BCFC is non-existent. He wants the best of both worlds and most City supporters have lost their patience with him and he should move on. If he's not prepared to sign with us can we not insist that he goes to the highest bidder? I think the answer to that question is NO which seems totally one sided to me.
