9 places for Asian teams seems way too high in retrospect, over half of them, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi and Uzbekistan propping up the table in their groups with 2 points between them......makes you wonder if nations like Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan regret joining UEFA, they'd have a decent chance of qualifying for world cups if they rejoined Asia, they've absolutely no hope through European routes
I think they would be better going with 50 .
10 groups of 5 ,Group winners plus 6 best runners up plus give the extra 2 spots to Europe .
back to 32 for me, feels like an everyone gets a medal day with this many teams, so many crap nations there....
Senegal have recovered some reputation since this was posted.....some cracking goals, Iraq no hopers with 11 they've been a train wreck with 10
What do you feel is scandalous? The fact that Senegal are going to qualify and they are a poor team in your eyes or the format that allows them to qualify (or maybe do so in 3rd place?). They can only beat what's in front of them and in hammering the minnows of the group they've given themselves a chance. Plenty of poorer teams on show here; Qatar, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Scotland etc.
You just know that FIFA are going to go for 64 teams for the 2034 WC despite loads of teams in this competition being crap
16 groups of 4 with the top 2 going through
32 teams in 8 groups of 4 wasn’t broke so why fix it? It’s like the EFL Championship play-offs being expanded to include 7th and 8th.
A team that finishes 3rd in a group of 4 should never qualify for the knock-off rounds of any tournament. It’s bollocks. It reduces jeopardy and cheapens the competition.

Genuinely think UEFA have a real opportunity to say **** it, 32 team euros and we'll make up the shortfall with teams from outside Europe....basically recreating what the WC used to be
nah, coming 6 out of 24 is a lot different to 3 out of 4, you've got to have a winning season to get there
I actually think that would be better in all honesty, I mean there's that much **** at the wc anyway are the next 16 teams that much worse? A more accurate comparison would be us going up after finishing 13th-18th.
