Ornstein says Brighton’s made a £30m bid for Vuskovic and the player favours a move there for development purposes.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we end up doing a deal. Sort of thing we’d do; sell an actually good young player whilst persist with dross like Odobert, Tel etc.

I'm torn on this. There is no reason we shouldn't play a Real or Barca with this deal. Sanction the move and insert a buy-back clause of say £50m. Let him develop there for 2-3 years and then buy him back to slip seamlessly into the team as Senesi comes to the end of his career.

Those clubs do this the whole time and it often works out very well for them.

But definitely don't want to lose him on a permanent deal, we'd be absolutely mad to do that.

Brighton don’t strike me as the type of club to agree to that type of deal.

As for us and being absolutely mad, we lost our sanity years back considering some of the transfer decisions we’ve made.

Brighton will sell to a top club easier than Spurs will. Vuskovic clearly believes he will make it to the very top of the game so seems to be looking long term already.

Couldn’t Spurs loan him to them as part of the deal for Van Hecke? That way he gets his regular football but Spurs don’t lose a huge talent.

Surely we laughed that proposal out of the door. Even taking the cash figures out of it, JPVH is going into the last year of his contract. The club has to plan for the long term and Vuskovic has to be part of that, even if it’s about driving his value up further. Compromising that for a player in JPVH’s position would be silly.

This smacks as Brighton playing games during negotiations and fair play to them. They know that this news getting out will unsettle the Spurs fans as nobody trusts the club. The biggest energy from Spurs now would be to slap the cash down for JPVH and shop Vuskovic to Palace on loan.

Overall this situation confuses me though. De Zerbi clearly loves JPVH and statistically he’s one of the best progressive CBs in the league. He’s a good stylistic fit, even if the stats can lie - they say as much about what a player is being asked to do by a coach, as they do what a player is capable of.

But I’ve said it before - this is a unique chance for Spurs to give serious minutes to a 19 year old who is considered one of the brightest prospects in the game. Everything is set up for him to get plenty of game time and oust Danso, who is a reliable servant to the club but not a high ceiling player. We have plenty of other CBs and have just got one for free who is also an extremely strong progressive profile, and who can play RCB or LCB.

If Brighton are playing silly buggers, either turn the tables on them or just walk away. JPVH is a good player but I don’t think this is a game we need to play.

Vuskovic has now agreed personal terms with Brighton according to a few journos.

Other clubs expected to come in for him though.

Think he’s a goner.

In other news, small whispers that Porro’s close to signing a new deal.

Unless we give him assurances of 30+ starts next season then I think he’s off.

Considering the Senesi signing and van Hecke links, we clearly don’t really have a plan for Vuskovic and I think he probably sees it, hence the willingness to join Brighton, knowing full well if he performs as expected he’ll get an elite club move within a couple seasons.

The lad’s got his head screwed on, a rarity in football.

Crazy if it goes through considering the clubs he’s been linked with.

He’s been an annoyance for a while though and seems to have been trying to do things on his terms for ages. Everything about wanting to play with his brother, well he probably would have done if his brother wasn’t a drugs cheat!

Yeah he’s only 19 but like I said in my earlier post, he knows going to Brighton for a couple of years and doing well means a move to a top top side in 2-3 years for huge money will be easier than if he stays at Spurs where he probably won’t get as much game time and Spurs are less likely to be willing to sell.

...and this is why a proper DoF should have been our first appointment this summer.

Coaches aren't interested in players beyond the here and now. Vuskovic in 2 or 3 years time is no use to De Zerbi, if he gets the tin tack next season.

The DoF is there to look beyond the coach's needs and balance them with the club's interests.

It seems that we're forever damned with failing to strike that balance.

Why make plans when you can just react?

This ****ing club...

He's got four years left on his contract here. If he had no intention of honouring that, he shouldn't have signed it.

He holds none of the chips right now, the club does.

We should tell him to put up or shut up and head out on a PL loan next season to really prove himself.

Something about this transfer makes me very uneasy.

And if it goes through, is yet another nail in the coffin of us having any clue how to find and develop young talent.

Good point.

Right now it seems RDZ is calling all the shots which isn't healthy. He's been at the club for a few months and his list of achievements is avoiding relegation, not winning the treble.

Meanwhile Lange is just a flaccid mess who lost whatever pretense of power he once had after the debacles of last summer and January.

It's each to his own, at the moment.

Personal terms mean nothing in this context. If a PL club can’t agree terms with a 19yr old who has not played outside Croatia, Belgium and a relegation threatened team in Germany, then they might as well go home. Personal terms are usually sorted before the clubs agree anything anyway.

Case in point, we agreed personal terms with Gibbs-White and Eze last summer

Come on, CK, since when do players genuinely intend to honour contracts? They’re signed primarily for financial stability but the moment an option arises for a better deal they’ll jump at it.

Vuskovic probably feels that there isn’t a path here considering the CBs we have and are looking to sign and he’s probably right. It does feel like RDZ is targeting experience and Prem proven at that too.

I think he leaves but for considerably more than what Brighton are currently offering, it’s felt like long before today’s news he hasn’t overly fancied returning, often spoke about a second year at HSV to play with his brother and “seeing what the future holds” and now this Brighton bid has arrived, they’re the perfect club for developing talent, he’ll know that and he’ll know 1-2 good seasons with them gets him a move to City/ Bayern/ Paris/ Barca/ Madrid. From his POV, it’s a no-brainer.

Vuskovic is quite possibly a once in a generation talent imho.
I think he's ready to start for us next season and if it was up to me he'd be kept and given significant game time, but a straight sale to Brighton or whoever for anything less than £50m without either a buyback or significant sell on fee option would be financially incompetent.
He may want the idea of regular at a Brighton or similar, but he's under contract here, so it should be for the club to decide how his talent can be best utilised.

Absolutely.

We stood our ground on Modric and Kane among others and reaped the reward.

To me this sounds like we are so fixated on Van Hecke that we'd be willing to sacrifice a player who may well be vastly superior to the Dutchman in 2-3 years' time.

Its the usual panic and hastiness that has characterised our decision making for years.

Checkmated us with that move imo

Brighton too smart for Dumb n Dumber

Not really. JPVH has a year left on his deal and if they block a move this summer they lose out on a pretty big fee. Risk him going for half that in Jan or nothing in the summer. Both clubs will feel they hold cards.

There’s some speculation that Brighton are trying to play a bit funny here too as JPVH has a small sell on fee for his previous club.

I hope you are right

Vuskovic got 4 years of his contract left?

We should act like a big club in all this and tell them to FO if so
