I quite like the look of the striker that Southampton had yesterday. I think he could fit the Ross Stewart-shaped hole since we've had in our attack since we sold Ross Stewart. Can't recall exactly who he was but he was tidy. He's available on a free. Might have been called Ross Stewart.
He made a lovely foul just before his goal.

And how did he miss that first chance!!!!

Eight home grown is a challenge. We need at least 1, possibly 4 if players leave and no one in the ranks to really step up. We’ll need to keep some money back to bolster the ranks

Current homegrown ( I think):
Moore, Balkard, Cirkin, O’Nien, Rigg, Mundle, Mayenda, H Jones, Ba is listed in our 1st team squad too, but is obvs out

Ba needs replacing
Probs Cirkin
Maybe Mundle ?
Harrison Jones may stay as a sacrificial lamb!

Existing younger players as home grown?
Matt Young - ? Nope, diminishes his growth
Aleksic - nope , only two years at SAFC
Abdullahi - nope, only two years at SAFC
Ogunsunyi - not ready?
Tutierov - not ready
Bainbridge, Lavery, Zak Johnson & Jenson Jones - very unlikely

I think the general work around for teams is that it's 8 homegrown OR u21.

So you can sign a talented 18/19/20 even 21 year old (for a season) and they don't count towards the foreign player limit.

Talbi and sadiki and even diarra didn't count towards the 17 this season

So any U21s must be recognised as being in the first team squad? Do they need to have been in our U21s for a certain period of time?

I’d take him on a free personally. Also adds to homegrown quota.

i noticed this

hes out of contract isnt he and my first thought was i hope he gets through that PO final unscathed and signs a new deal and the boy is truly set as he deserves it.

If he was available on a free id have him for depth in a heartbeat

£10 million transfer and he was given a 3 year contract. That's mad. I thought it would be 4 years minimum.

No so let's say for example we have hit the maximum for foreign players - 17.

We can then register as many extra players as we want if they are classed as u21, foreign or not and no requirements for having played in our academy previously.

(Obviously you then run the risk of those players when they've turned 22 the next season being your 18, 19 or 20th foreign player and would need to move some on).

Also any player who is signed in the summer at 18 years old or younger will eventually gain homegrown status in England and would contribute to the 8 non foreign later on. A couple notable examples of this recently are Amad and Saliba both classing as homegrown.

Essentially we should be fine regarding having sufficient squad depth as we can fill any gaps with younger talent after making the key first team signings.

Would have been up for it but he actually doesn't contribute to homegrown quota unfortunately.
Did not know that. You think UK based so that would be homegrown - no.

Definition of Homegrown: According to Premier League rules, a homegrown player must be affiliated with an FA-affiliated club (England or Wales) for three seasons or 36 months before the end of the season in which they turn 21.

(A homegrown player is a player who, regardless of their nationality or age, has been affiliated with any English or Welsh club for a period of three entire seasons or 36 months before their 21st birthday.

The same rules apply to players who have three seasons or 36 months as a registered player prior to the end of the season in which that player turns 21.

An example of this is Chelsea's Brazilian striker Joao Pedro. The 23-year-old, born in Sao Paulo, joined Watford in 2020 aged 18. Because he spent three consecutive years before turning 21 in England, he is considered homegrown.

Another case where the homegrown rule comes into effect is Arsenal winger Noni Madueke.

Madueke, 23, joined PSV Eindhoven's academy in June 2018 as a 16-year-old and did not return to England until January 2023, joining Chelsea two months before his 21st birthday.

Because Madueke had been an academy player at Crystal Palace and Tottenham prior to moving to Eindhoven, he is still classed as homegrown)
