As I said, the efl will be praying for a Boro win. It will make life so much easier for them. And if Southampton do win. Would Boro just take that? I don't think so. Southampton have been caught cheating. Boro will have been working on tactics all week to beat Southampton. Set pieces, formations, 1st choice 11. It would have given Southampton an edge having this information. By the sound of it, they were videoing their training sessions. I don't think Expulsion would be disproportionate.
The play off final is a £200m prize for the winning club. In my opinion, Southampton should be expelled. But, I'm not sure that can be done. So would it come down to financial compensation paid to Boro. Or a heavy fine for Southampton.
As I said, it could become a real mess. With legal challenges that could go on for longer than the 10 days to the final.
I recall Swindon beating Sunderland in the play-off final, but Sunderland getting promoted.. What's the betting it won't happen again?
The turnaround for the final is tight enough as it is. Our fans have already started booking travel and accommodation for the final. If that did happen, then people are going to be out of pocket.

The team who really got pissed off at Sunderland being promoted after losing the final was Newcastle (surprise, surprise), who Sunderland had beaten in the semifinal.
Newcastle had finished third in the league, 6 points above the other 3 playoff teams.
This was in the early days of playoffs when there was still a critical mass of thinking that the team who finished third should be automatically promoted.
I remember a lot of Newcastle supporters I was working with being incensed that Sunderland got into the First Division through a back door that they didn’t believe should exist.
Very funny. Kept me amused all summer.

Yep. I'm sure it will get horribly messy unless Boro win. So I guess for a clean run-up to the final, that's the preferable result for us. Though I think we've slightly more chance against Southampton.
Personally, I think expulsion would be way too harsh - should always be very very last resort.
I can't imagine much will be done about it that will significantly harm them. A fine in the hundreds of thousands probably, maybe at worst, a small points deduction?
I suppose we'll find out in time.

I don't agree. It is blatant cheating, and trying to gain an advantage by cheating. To be a deterrent, the punishment has to be harsh enough that other clubs will not risk it in future.
I don't know if expulsion would be harsh. If they got promoted, then the Premier League don't have to give the points deduction. A few hundred k fine would be nothing to what they would get for a promotion.
Then there is the damage it would do to Boro. That Southampton have gained an advantage from seeing Boro's tactics. And cutdown their chance of beating Southampton.
A boro win would make things so much easier. Tonight's game is massive. It will have so much interest. Because of spygate.
Should we be hoping for a Southampton win on the grounds that the resulting chaos can only be beneficial to us?

I don't think it will be beneficial to us. We won't know 100% who we;re playing, we'd have to prep imagining we're playing Southampton, but with the faint possibility Middlesbrough could take their place. So deffo better for a Boro win, even though the mess if it went the other way would be quite fun.
Well regardless of our own opinions on how it should be handled by the EFL, I am reasonably sure the eventual outcome will have no major impact on Soton.
And if they did incur a points deduction, then it'd only be applicable in the EFL anyway. As in if they go up, it'd wait until they came down again.
It will not be possible for Boro or the EFL to prove that Southampton gained any advantage as the actions were pre fixture and not post.

I'm not really sure what you mean in this post but Southampton broke a specific rule
which was brought in after Leeds were caught spying on an opponent
The idea that some club employee just decided to do it himself with nobody
else knowing about it is just laughable
I hope they get a serious punishment for this not just a slap on the wrist small fine
Imagine Southampton win tonight, get kicked out, then we get to go to Wembley for a charity raiser vs a team of our choosing, having already been promoted.
