Is that picture legit? Trouble is, you don't know if what you are looking at is real these days, but it's quite clear Calvert-Lewin is twisting Martinez's balls. Red card offense.

Bah, selective still image shows nothing. Let’s not forget we are talking about a red card. A sending off offence. The ‘violence’ involved here is an insult to the word. Long hair is now an unfair advantage as the slightest contact can get another player sent off. I can lunge in with my studs on top of a foot and cause bruising and swelling and get a free kick awarded and maybe a yellow but pulling a scrunchie out of a pony tail is a sending off. It’s so out of whack. And I never complained about Stephen’s getting sent off because it was clearly deliberate, this was normal contact with the opponent.

Outside of this specific example it emphasises rule as written v rule as intended (maybe I'm exposing my inner nerd here...)

Pulling someones hair intentionally is a red card but there doesn't seem to be any latitude for when someone has obviously longer hair and in the contact element of the sport the offender wasn't looking at the point of contact and grabbed where for the majority of players there is just shirt and no hair and caught hair.

Pulling on someones shirt in the middle of their back whilst making a tackle and not looking at where you're grabbing is a potential yellow, the moment someone's hair is in that location and you do the exact same thing it's a straight red?

It backs up my view that VAR is removing the responsibility of making a judgment call from the refs as they can miss something or get it wrong and VAR will step in and rectify it.

If it’s not violent conduct to pull Cucerellas hair, then you aren’t trying hard enough. Pull as hard as you can with both hands!

I think this is right. Having now seen a clip of the incident, I think that not only did Martinez pull Calvert-Lewin's hair but appeared to be reaching out for it. And by the way the rules are applied currently, that is a red card. But the issue is the rule doesn't allow for a minor tug (as last night) compared to an all out Jack Stephens. We all know why it was it was introduced but last night's incident was in no way violent. Refs are expected to be able to determine if a tackle is fair or dangerous so they should be able to judge how violent the tugging of someone's hair was.

If Bournemouth do pluck some other appointment out who does well too, you’ve got to wonder how long until someone poaches whoever the brains is behind their success. They’re a tiny club punching well above their weight for a long time now.

Like we did with Rasmus from Brentford
