A quick update on the Robins that are squatting in my garden shed.

By the sound of it, I have about 200 jackdaw chicks in my loft!
Jackdaws are everywhere around here, it seems like every unused chimney has a nest in it. Old houses had a fireplace in each room, so even though it is quite a small semi-detached ours has 6 flues. All except one, are capped off now but next door has quite a nice collection of nests.

I'm not sure when that will be. The fourth egg was only laid overnight/early today, there may be more to come yet.
I'm trying not to disturb them but that shed has all the gardening equipment in it. Once the young have hatched they are unlikely to desert the nest, so the quicker they incubate them the better for all of us. Just looked it up, Robin's eggs take 12-15 days from laying to hatching.
They've been hatched for a few days now but I'm trying not to disturb them too much. There were 5 eggs but I can't make out whether they all hatched or not. I believe this is the only Robin's nest in the UK to come complete with it's own electrical supply.

One week later and looking more like proper birds (as WoolstonSaint might say 
). I can see at least four chicks (again as Woolston might say) from the five eggs but there may be a fifth hidden below it's brothers and sisters. Making good progress in the safety and cover that the shed provides. Next door's cat was sniffing at the door the other day, he must know they're in there but he's got no chance of getting in. The cat is a nice fluffy moggy but has only three legs, if I catch him trying to get into the shed (he's surprisingly agile even with just three) he's going to be down to his last two.

They've left the nest and are out into the big wide world. I can get the lawn mower out of the shed now.

Endangered Mexican axolotl discovered by girl, 10, under a bridge in Wales
Evie and her mother were enjoying a day trip to south Wales when they came across the amphibian.

A nature-loving 10-year-old girl who found an endangered amphibian under a bridge has left her mum in "shock, surprise and disbelief".
Melanie Hill said her daughter, Evie, discovered the nine-inch Mexican axolotl as they spent the day near the River Ogmore in Bridgend.
I was working in the garden yesterday. Our young Robins are less wary than their parents. Can only see two from the original four unfortunately, that's nature I guess.

I'd like to say "yeah, I took extra care with the light and focus, etc, etc, etc" but in truth I didn't have my glasses with me. I could just about see he* was in the middle of the screen and pushed the button. No-one was more surprised than me how it came out. As you say, he did allow me to get close though.
I was moving the composter so there were plenty of bird size snacks available. When he arrived I stood still and that's when he started getting close to my feet. The parent birds are still feeding him so they would come and go over the afternoon but they wouldn't get any closer than 4 or 5 metres.
*I say he but even when they are adults I can't really tell the difference. I think the males are slightly bigger?
