Never done that journey but I have done Newcastle to Southampton, back in 1968. Used to get the overnight coach as a student. 9 hours to London then 3 hours to Southampton. That was the express bus! I changed to hitchhiking, it was quicker.

Once the ticket is activated in the app it doesn’t need any network access so if the internet is down it won’t affect the ticket.
I just accept that it's magic, and cannot be explained by rational thought
Yep it is very much like you don't need internet to pay by your apple wallet/Google wallet on the phone....also just like surprisingly your debit/credit card doesn't have internet access either for contactless

I'm not certain, but if you, and whoever you want to sit/stand with, are already members, you can link your membership numbers together, via the 'Friends and Family' option, which is part of the ticket purchase option on the Saints web site. I have probably got the terms/names wrong, but basically, if you try to buy tickets, one of the options on the page is for 'Friends and Family'. I suggest that you try doing this before you try to buy tickets, otherwise your head may explode
