One of my first jobs post-University was to transfer / recode engineering calculation programs from a machine not too dissimilar to that to a PC. The guy who’d programmed it originally and subsequently retired was brought in on a consultancy basis to make sure I got the code right from a maths perspective. He literally couldn’t believe that what was basically his life’s work could be done in SuperCalc and take up a couple of floppy discs.
… and in turn both SuperCalc and floppy discs are obsolete now. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
