The Damned United (the story of Brian Cloughs ill fated time at Leeds) has just started on BBC2, and its just shown Elland Road with Leed United A.F.C. in big lettering on the stadium. Bit like how we had Sunderland A.F.C at Roker Park.

This got me thinking....
Are we the only club that still has the "A", for Association in their name?
I cant recall Leeds ever been called LUAFC, just LUFC, and im sure there will have been others with Association in their original names.

Personally, I love that we kept it, S.F.C. Just wouldn't seem right.

Yep, this is how bored I am.

Edit: "bored" is not the right word, "at a loss" would be more appropriate.

Notable Clubs with "Association" in Full Name
Sunderland Association Football Club (Sunderland A.F.C.)
Wrexham Association Football Club (Wrexham A.F.C.)
Harrogate Town Association Football Club (Harrogate Town A.F.C.)
Oldham Athletic Association Football Club (Oldham Athletic A.F.C.)
AFC Bournemouth (often officially registered as A.F.C. Bournemouth)
AFC Wimbledon (formed as a phoenix club for Wimbledon
Had to google it cos I ‘ m off to bed shortly - didn’t want to start going through alphabet !

Maybe the association on Leeds signage is to to differentiate them from Leeds Rugby league club.

An Ipswich supporter friend married to a Spurs supporter once asked me what the A stood for. Neither of them knew the game used to be called Association Football back in the early days.
It still is. Rugby is rugby football, "soccer" is association football. Can you not remember the judge in one of Gazza's court cases saying "rugby or association" when Gazza's lawyer told the judge he was a footballer? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Sunderland Rugby club were founded a few years before SAFC (1873) and as we know SAFC were founded as Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club in 1879. We adopted the name Sunderland Association Football Club in 1880 when non teachers were allowed to join and I guess SAFC was used to differentiate between two "football" clubs in the town (as was).
