Surprised we aint got a Toon invasion on here, very disappointing.

Take this with a huge pinch of salt as I'm obviously very biased but I can't think of a worse refereeing performance than the one I watched in that match.

Villa goal was offside. Not a controversial opinion, it factually was.
Digne should have got a red. That's not as clear cut, it's an opinion, though it is an opinion that the commentators, pundits and all the neutral media outlets I've read agree with.
Giving a free kick rather than a penalty. Made me laugh when Rooney said it was the worst refereeing decision he can remember given that he was on the pitch when Lampards goal wasn't given against Germany.

Utterly shockingly bad.

In the referees defence there were a lot of big calls they got right. There were 2-3 penalty shouts we had in the first half which were tangles of legs, one I think was debateable when they slowed it down and watched it back but none were ones I would have given and none should have been given. I also think the keepers red had to be a sending off.

As for the Villa fans... they were booing the ref and chanting about bias. WTAF.

That will happen. How between the ref and linesman they think Digne isn’t even on the line when he’s a good two yards inside the box is really bizarre. They’re both in good positions to see it.

Agree. The offside I've no real issue with, in real time I thought it was offside but I also wanted it to be. When you see it on replay it's close enough that you've just got to accept as a fan.

The penalty, no idea how they don't know where the defender is stood. If the ref had waved it away entirely as a ball-to-hand I'd have accepted it as I always feel a bit for defenders in that situation, they are allowed to have arms.

I think the ref and/or lino should serve a suspension after todays game. How him or the lino never noticed that was in the box is just strange. Tammy was also offside but that happens without var. I don't think we even need a var room for the handball decision, just give the ref access to a monitor - it was so clear and obvious it would have taken all of 5 seconds. Think it was an Italian game I was watching the other day, that took 8 minutes to give an offside lol.

That was Barca.

They barely have enough refs as it is. You wouldn’t want to be promoting the absolute traffic wardens and former bullied schoolchildren we get in our leagues.

Yeah I think there should be a limit to the time they can take too. The decision we got in our favour against Man City in the League Cup was equally as scandalous and showed the worst elements of VAR. Call the ref over to a monitor if they think there's a possible mistake and then he get's like 60-90 seconds to make his mind up.

Didn't really care who won out of Villa and Toon, just wanted an entertaining game, and the Villa keeper made sure of that, clown lol - if it had been in the league I'd have wanted Villa, only to keep the pressure on the top.

Toon were clearly the better team against 10, and Tonali seems to improve every game I see him in. Looked like he's got over his home sickness today and had really taken to the travelling fans.

Yeah I think we've over complicated the decisions, and today proved that refs are weaker because of it. I can only think complacency has set in with the officials, knowing they've always got the VAR room.

Monitor side of the pitch, 60 seconds, captain of both teams at the most is all it needs. Only technology that is a must for me is goal-line, that never fails and never causes controversy.

Would open up a whole can of worms. Imagine the guy being pressured to make a call as the clock ticks down or the knobhead who puts the clip together rewinding too far and killing five seconds. You either bin it or you have it and it’s ****. It will never be good or always quick.
