Does anyone have a "New Year Resolution" for 2012 as regards betting on the horses, or otherwise? Mine is a slightly strange one but nonetheless I am going to try and keep it:

I will always, but always, back a son or daughter of my old pal Haafhd when the offspring is going on a galloping track (e.g. Newmarket), the ground is on the soft side, and the distance is between 7f and 9f. Missed one or two smashers in 2011, so, to heck with the form, I'm going to be "on" for certain. Just have to make sure I go through every card, which meets the criteria, on each day when the Flat season starts in earnest!

Mine would have to be "stop trying to back the winner of every race - be more selective"

My main one, which I have been meaning to do for ages but still haven’t got round to, is to never have a bet without first forming a 100% market for the race. That way you get a total feel for the heat and you ensure that you never step into the old ‘betting jungle’ unless you can obtain a price which you believe is value. Am going to try to take the time to do this because I really believe that such an approach will reap huge rewards.

It wonlt happen but i would like to try and remove sentiment from my betting selections. Lost way too much backing purely on a trainer or a jockey and also missed out through not backing ones i don't like.

To rewatch more races when reading the form, and spend more time looking at one race rather than all races.

    Oh, and avoid big lorries.

From 1 Jan I vow never to back a horse on the place market (Betfair) until very close to post time.
I've grown very tired of taking 2.36 to place about a horse whose SP is 8/1 or bigger

My new years resolution - probably wont stick to it but once I have made my mind up on what horse to back, I wont change my mind, the number times I have changed my mind and wished I had stuck with my 1st choice!!

Will be the best move you ever make <ok>

Even if you 'miss' a winner. If you start thinking "What if", you'll back every horse in every race. I also prefer betting on good quality racing nowadays, I think too many handicaps are there to be exploited by crooks.

Never change your mind was one of the first things drummed into me by my betting mentor as a young lad - well actually you CAN change your mind, but NEVER after you have committed it to a betting slip, or in this day and age, electronic media :D

Never look at the Lingfield card again and think '...but surely...'. Too many short prices beaten by bad logic.

Agree with most re selective punting.

I have been doing that for two years now.I only bet when I genuinely believe I have a chance of winning..sometimes twice a day, very rarely tbh ,sometimes twice a month.

I love racing and love watching the sport whether financially involved or not which helps.

What I always do is record and reappraise maiden races and novice events for future reference.

For me particular value can be found in novice chases, where despite previous hurdle ratings, superior contenders are over priced, especially in Ireland.

I'm no pro punter but make a decent profit overall.
