Looks like they have caotured Maduro too. It is amazing how surgical this operation appears to have been. I will be interested to see if there will be any repercussions and how quickly America will steal the oil from Venezuela. I can see Europe being nervous about the future of Greenland after this. There needs to be a statement from UN condemning this action. I would agree that Maduro has squandered the kegacy of Hugo Chavez but the American action puts Trump in a position where criticism of Putin will now feel very hypocritical.
And still 3 years more to go. What an absolute disgrace it is. A total world tyrant on the loose. A scary time for the world right now.

3 major powers in the world and all ruled by meglamaniacs. At least theRussian and Chinese populations can say, ‘ We didn’t get a choice’. Americans elected their dictator. Peace prize? You couldn’t give it to a bigger idiot.

Quite interesting that Trump has moved quickly to sideline Machado too. I am surprised by that but think he has seriously undermined her.

The press conference also alluded to Cuba and this makes you wonder how quickly the Chinese will intervene. Just think that today has opened a Pandora's box of issues which could jeopardise Taiwan and Greenland as well as make places like the Falklands more important as China and US compete for control of South America. It seems to be a repeat of the Reagan era but just feel that the US will not been able to confront China as easily as the former USSR. Trump is not making the US great....just setting themselves up to ve vanquished by China. The US is now the underdog.

Ignoring the morality side of it for a second and you have to say it's an incredible operation to basically kidnap a dictator from another country in such a short time span.

Militarily the US really are on a completely different level to anyone else.

Libby

I thought this too but then read on the BBC that the CIA had someone on the inside who has accepted the ransom. Maduro was tucked up by one of his associates.

In addition, i do not expect the military services in Venezula are much cop. I like vintage airplanes and have always been amused just how many antiquated planes end up serving in the air forces of South American countries. It was a stellar piece of operational planning but the quality of the opposition was pretty poor.

These kinds of political events remind me of Joseph Conrad's "Nostromo."

Getting a bit more twitchy about Greenland and Canada tbh, if either of those happens NATO is dead and we are in the nomansland between the US and Russia whilst outside of the EU.

Isolated and vulnerable, at risk of becoming the proxy for future conflict between super states.

Same prison as Epstein, Maxwell and Puff Daddy.

I tbink there will be a backlash. Not convinced Trump will get away with this.
Be interesting to see what Congress say... It's a dangerous precedent for sure.

Maduro is an absolute tyrant and no loss to Venezuelans who are seemingly mostly on favour of him being captured but not really the point in the grander scheme of things.

Stumbled across this whilst cruising the web
"For anyone questioning the legality of attacking Venezuela and abducting their leader:
Remember we're talking about a highly corrupt leader, a known criminal who used his high office to make billions for himself, and has manipulated elections to stay in power, has used his military against his own citizens, has protected his corrupt friends and punished his political enemies.

And the President of Venezuela did some bad things too."

Spot on!

So they had intelligence as early as 5th September that there were local groups looking to target away fans.

All about the Israeli fans though...

A totally unbiased article from Jake Willis Simon. Not.

He writes a regular column for The Telegraph and his work also features frequently in the Spectator, the New York Post, and the The Jewish Chronicle. He has faced allegations of Islamophobia due to specific comments and articles he has published.
