I wonder just how far you would have to go before writing something about John Westwood that would be considered libellous?
Even most Pompey fans seemed to have disowned him. He is a discredit to the game and certainly adds nothing to other's perceptions about Portsmouth. A fan I work with had the misfortune to be seated next to him at Fratton Park and there were so many complaints that Westood was moved to another part of the ground where he couldn't be a nuisance.
I'm all for football fans being eccentric and having bizarre rituals as this is all part of the game. I loved that aspect of football when I went to the World Cup finals in France in 1998 and there were plenty of colour characters around Aix, Nimes and Avignon without any hostility or intimidation of other supports. Westwood seems especially inarticulate and the interviews he has given that either appear in some of the broadsheets when they are short of a story or on BBC South today always incorporate some barbed comment about "that lot down the road", almost as if he is defining himself by his hostility to Southampton. Amazing to discover that he comes from Petersfield which I always considered to be a bit up-market like Stockbridge , New Arlesford or Odiham. If he ever turned up at the latter, I am sure that the locals would put him in the stocks!
