Competition - Sky Bet Championship
Venue - Swansea.com Stadium
Date - 19 December 2025
Kick off - 8pm

Following their unlucky 1-2 away defeat at Stoke next up for Vitor Matos’ Swansea squad is the much awaited home match match against Wrexham.

Last Saturday, Ben Pearson - who in some respects was lucky to be still on the field - scored for the first time in 6 years as Stoke beat the Swans 2-1.

Defensive midfielder Pearson struck in spectacular fashion, curling the ball home from 25 yards to put Stoke ahead shortly before half-time.

Stoke's second goal came from a much more familiar source, as leading scorer Sorba Thomas coolly swept in at the far post from Bae Junho's low cross.

The Potters looked set to cruise to victory until Zan Vipotnik met substitute Melker Widell's superb centre with a crisp finish to rejuvenate Vitor Matos' team.

Despite a strong Swansea finish, Stoke held on for a welcome success having lost five of their previous six matches.

Mark Robins' team move back into the Championship play-off places before the day's later kick-offs, while the Swans drop to 19th after a sixth defeat in their past eight league games.

Later the same afternoon, Ollie Rathbone struck in the 92nd minute to salvage a draw for Wrexham at home to Watford.

Josh Windass notched his sixth goal of the season to give the hosts an early lead at the Stok Cae Ras.

Mamadou Doumbia and Othmane Maamma struck before half time as Watford looked on course for just a second away league victory of the season.

But substitute Rathbone - who had only been on the pitch for two minutes - levelled in the final stages as Phil Parkinson's men extended their unbeaten run at home in the league to eight matches.

Watford drop to 13th in the table, one place and a point above Wrexham.

Somewhat surprisingly the Swans have only played Wrexham on 31 occasions in ‘English’ competitions, winning 8, losing 16 and drawing 7.

The teams last met in a League match at the Vetch in 2003 when the teams played out a goalless draw.

Turning to tomorrow’s match, both sides will be desperate to win and bank the 3pts, as well as securing bragging rights for being currently the number one team in Wales.

For the Swans, defeat would effectively dump them right back into the relegation battle, particularly with Coventry away being the next match, whilst for Wrexham victory would boost their Play Off aspirations.

I think that backed by a sell out crowd, the Swans will raise their game and run out 2-1 winners. <cheers>

Thanks Taff...
I think VM will instil confidence in all our players in due course and we can already see the shrubs of progress in recent games. If we dont make too many mistakes we can win this "derby" by at least 3-1.

Oliver Langford will be the man in the middle when Swansea City host Wrexham at the Swansea.com Stadium tomorrow night.

Langford is now in his 15th season as a Football League referee, having made his debut in August 2008 in the League Two clash between Rochdale and Barnet.

The official from the west Midlands travelled to SA1 twice last season, taking charge of a south Wales derby draw against Cardiff and a defeat to Burnley.

Having been refereeing since 1995, Langford was promoted to the List of Referees in 2008. When Select Group 2 was introduced by PGMOL ahead of the 2016-17 season, he was one of 18 referees added to that list.

He has taken charge of two play-off semi-finals and the 2017 FA Youth Cup final. Despite not being named a Select Group Official, he is VAR trained and been part of officiating teams at Premier League level.

This season he has had the whistle for 13 games, handing out 47 yellow cards and two reds.

He will be assisted by Mark Stevens and David Harrison. Gavin Ward will be the fourth official.

We will not get any great referees as they dont exist so lets hope we dont need his help

Phil Parkinson has urged Wrexham to prove they are the best team in Wales in Friday's Championship meeting with Swansea City.

Wrexham head south as the highest-placed Welsh club in the EFL, with Parkinson's men five points and four league positions better off than Swansea in the Championship.

It is unfamiliar territory for Wrexham, who were playing in the National League only two-and-a-half years ago and have not finished a season as Wales' top-ranked side since 2001.

The Red Dragons will look to cement their place as the country's leading club by winning their first league encounter with Swansea in 22 years.

"We know what it means to everybody, all our supporters, and to be the pride of Wales is very, very important," Parkinson said.

"We're going to go all out to achieve that."

Swansea's fiercest rivals – by a distance - are Cardiff City, while Wrexham's chief rivalries have traditionally been with Chester and Shrewsbury Town.

But Parkinson is anticipating "a real fiery Welsh derby" at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Wrexham are back in the same division as the Swans courtesy of three straight promotions, with the south Wales club in their eighth successive Championship season following a seven-year spell in the Premier League which ended in 2018.

Swans boss Vitor Matos has reported no new injury concerns ahead of this fixture.

Wrexham, meanwhile, will be without striker Ryan Hardie after he picked up a knee injury in their draw against Watford.

Vitor Matos: “We know this is the sort of game that comes with a different emotional charge, and we will need this emotion and this passion to drive us forward.

“That will be important, but we will also need clarity, discipline and to show our identity in our game.

“We are at home, we have great support every game. Playing in our stadium, in front of our fans means a lot for us. It is a special place to be and I believe the connection between the team and the supporters is growing and growing.

“We need to have that connection to be stronger, we have an opportunity to bounce back from the last game and get closer to how we want to be."

Phil Parkinson: "You look at the contrasting fortunes of both clubs in those [past] 20 years, and obviously we had that 15-year block in the National League.

"But now we find ourselves in the same league as them and it's a real mouthwatering kind of game for everybody, hence it's captured a lot of attention.

"To be now finding ourselves where we are… of course we are [proud]. We know that it counts for so much and we can take satisfaction from that, but it's about the 90 minutes down at Swansea on Friday and proving that we are the top Welsh side."
