Agree, country is 'bust', there is far far too much waste .....but as for not enough tax being paid / collected? At some point we have to ask what is all the tax that is collected being collected being spent on? We can't just continue to raise more tax and add taxes on even more things.

We are taxed when we earn, taxed when we spend, when we save and when we die. A start would be to massively simplify.

Even taking away all the wasteful spending there's just not enough income to pay for all that is needed.
Roads, rail, schools, hospitals, elderly care, and all the rest.

I don't understand why governments of all flavours are so afraid of simple taxation. Income tax simple, the more you earn the more you pay wether that's 10% 20% or 30%
VAT simple, the more you spend the more you pay, wether you're buying a fiesta or a Rolls Royce.

Get rid of all the sneaky taxes, loopholes and exemptions. It probably still wouldn't be enough but it could be simpler to understand.

The tax being collected is being spent on basically everything. Unfortunately there are people that try and avoid paying tax, and people wring as much as they can out of the system, such as the consultancy firms charging enormous rates to advise the government. There are too many middlemen taking a cut

BBC news roving reporter asking a lorry driver stuck in North Yorkshire how bad it is????
Ye it’s been bad

he’s got his cab window down and he’s in a t shirt
Oh it must be ****ing horrendous

It wouldn't be so bad if the lorries had stayed off the roads.

Lorries are notoriously bad at getting traction on snow and ice, even more so when unladen. I've seen in Europe when the bad weather starts the trucks are sent into the parking areas and have to wait until the ploughs and gritters have got the road drivable then they are released.

I live in the region. 21 years ago myself and my family lived through a Cat 5 hurricane (it would have been Cat 6+ if that even existed). House pretty much destroyed along with cars etc and believe me its no fun to live through.

3 deaths in the UK does not diminish deaths elsewhere due to events such as a major hurricane.
Whereabouts do you live mate? I’ve just come back from Jamaica a couple days ago. Heading back there in a weeks time.

How did you have signal the day after the storm?

I think the death toll in Jamaica could be significantly higher than reported so far...

Dozens dead.

It’s now diseases that are sweeping through the country killing folk. One of them is leptospirosis and there’s another that’s coming from mosquitoes.

Was going to get a Xmas tree from Tescos but they’ve only got Evergreen trees .
I’m now looking for festive forest supplies !

I don’t know anything about the concrete central barriers…other than they are popping up everywhere, but the old Armco (?) metal ones were designed to give and gradually return you to the driving lane (with a ****ed up car, but at least safer for you)
How are the new ones designed to work?

EDIT - They’re Jersey barriers apparently (although aren’t made of wool) and last longer than metal ones.
https://www.clearway.co.uk/news/what-is-a-jersey-barrier/

The concrete barrier needs less central reservation so it has been a relatively cheap way of getting extra width for the motorway. Armco and wire rope barriers were designed to give and deform which is why they have a bigger central reservation, the concrete barrier just bounces you back into the traffic, hopefully not upside down as there are claims that the angles of the barrier can flip vehicles over.
