While I'm glad Jak is concerned about the dropping deep after taking the lead, we were also giving up a lot of chances before we scored too..

Kind of mad to think Joffy has as many goals as Diame or Jelavic scored.

Also for all the hype, am I missing something or wasn't that Slater's 201st appearance for us in all comps? Coyle's 200th coming up against Ipswich though.

Slater's 200th appearance.

Listening to Serge, maybe Ajayi was left out today because of the disappointment of his World Cup and Egan played because of his WC.

Either way, Egan doesnt boss it for me, Hughes needs someone alongside him to teach him the same way Daws taught Maguire... as it is he's learning nothing. I think we will be in the market for a CB in January.... and as I said earlier, use the defensive coaches salary to get a decent one..
We let two decent back four players go in the summer, Jones and McLoughlin.

Desperately need McBurnie back, absolutely nothing holding the ball upfront and as mentioned prior helps out with defending set plays too.
We do need him back but we're still scoring goals. I think we've got enough to shore up midfield and defence without having to over-rely on McB's undoubted defensive qualities. I think it's equally if not more important to get Lundstram back.
Also good to see Destan score again. Like his other goal, put it in the right place for him and he puts it away, no messing.

Sick to death of hearing Burns’ commentary or whatever it is that he offers.

I don’t want to hear about how he thinks City should be beating the likes of these cos they’re slightly out of form; or how they definitely should have had a pen; or how we’re more likely to do this or that...

I find his opinions akin to some dickhead down the pub I’d go out of my way to avoid.

I stopped listening to his RH commentaries/SportsTalk over 15 years ago, and now years later, as tech has allowed to watch every game we don’t attend, I have to suffer his irksome and banal observations. Is that some sort of payback or karma?
Totally agree with the above.

It’ll be typical us to go and win these “harder” games next time out.
It would be ... but ...... I sense they will be the proverbial 'step too far' and realistically fear we could well lose all 3. We've done incredibly well considering who we've had missing, and, although we may see 3 of the 5 (McB, Belloumi, Lundstram) feature in the match day squad they won't be up to speed and will likely only play bit parts if any. And now we lose Crooks too. January onwards could be quite something IF we can get and keep them all fit.

A lot has been said about our injuries and whilst they are significant, do they account for the defensive issues?

I actually think we’ve been one of the best attacking teams in the league, especially on the counter, despite our injuries. We’re also the second-worst defensively. We tend to concede a lot of goals regardless of what personnel we have in defence and midfield as well. Hadžiahmetović and Lundstram weren’t a great pairing, unless I’m misremembering. Drameh is good defending 1v1 on the ground but terrible in the air. Egan has actually been quite disappointing as he’s not been the steady, experienced head next to Hughes that I thought he would be. We know Hughes is quality on the ball and very aggressive out of possession and likes to step up to win headers, intercept the ball, make blocks etc. Ironically, he needs a player like Alfie Jones next to him. I’m guessing Ajayi was supposed to be that player but his injury record makes him unreliable.

The last time we shipped this many goals was under Shota when he had Figueiredo next to Greaves. Rosenior’s solution was to switch to a back four of Coyle, Jones, McLoughlin and Greaves with Greaves playing a hybrid left-back/centre-back role. Dropping Giles for Famewo is out of the question so that leaves the right-back tucking in as an extra centre-back in possession.

We already play this 3-2-5 shape in possession but with both fullbacks getting forward and the defensive mid dropping as a centre-back. The solution could be to have Coyle play as an extra centre-back, Giles gets forward as usual and Hadžiahmetović sits in front of the defence instead of dropping into defence.

We did quite well for a chunk of games when Ajayi was playing regularly I thought. Up until derby we seemed a lot tighter.
