Hello @marcusblackcat and other mods. As mentioned briefly with @Smug in Boots @RTB in another thread, I would like to propose a trial for temporary suspension of all political threads on our football forum. Perhaps for 30 days to see if it worthy of permanent imposition. My feeling behind this idea is that, firstly, this is a football forum and should cater to that in the main and that political threads have become a detraction from that, sometimes taking up the majority of spots on the first page, also i am starting to feel like it is sewing disunity amongst Sunderland supports here on the forum, bleeding into normal football topics. There are more than enough spaces across the internet (Twitter, Bluesky, Reddit etc) for people to discuss their politics without it being a necessity here. What say you?
I don't mind the political threads, I'm happy to either ignore them, or read them just to work out who's a c**t. It winds me up when a football related thread gets derailed with politics or arguments though.
I disagree with the OP. I agree, this is a football forum, let's talk about Sunderland. However, we cannot ignore what is going on in the city, country or world. The redevelopment of our city goes hand-in-hand with our resurgence. How we are affected by our surroundings, political and economic environment affects our feel good and ultimately support of our club.
One of the problems I'm noticing is interestingly contained in your post, "work out who's bad", is inevitably taken into other threads one way or the other because if you think someone is a bad person, even if they have a good football take elsewhere on the forum you end up not wanting to hit the 'like' button on them, because at the end of the day you think they're a bad person (broken clock and all that).
Free speech and all that.. If someone gets triggered by someone having a different political opinion to the point where they fall out as Sunderland fans then they want to get a grip.
Isn't this forum really our village, we chat about what we like outside of football. Let's keep it going without any rules other than common sense Beat me to it
I’m sorry mate I don’t find that to be true, I reckon there’s some right plonkers on them but they still get a like if I agree with them Mind it’s not very often I agree with Blondy, Is he a bot ?
I have no issue with political threads. I have a long held interest in politics and I still learn much from the comments. I also believe that everyone is entitled to hold a view, I may not agree with all of them but they have the right to hold those views and express them. Social media can be poisonous at times, but it is also a barometer of the electorates feelings and politicians should ignore it at their peril
And please feel free to quote any inaccuracies I post and I will happily correct my thoughts and beliefs I've given up hope for Roger though
If we're keeping them around, might go full belt into them, get ready for some mild racism and mega trolling?
Agree completely. Politics is such a divisive subject in the current climate I'd be happy to keep it off this board.
Disagree but good thread. I wouldn't like to be told what topics we can and can't discuss. Must iterate that political discussions should be kept respectful even if disagreements are on a fundamental level. Like @Montysoptician says, reading points of view that I disagree with is healthy and you learn sometimes as well.
I voted "bad idea". There have been some cracking political threads over the years. When Thatcher died lots of us were cheering but two lads came on and said they were Thatcherites, and they got no abuse whatsoever. Also during the Scottish independence referendum there was an excellent discussion, with only one poster getting a bit nasty. I've come out with very strong views and never had any personal stuff back. Of course others have come back with the opposite very strong views. Which is kind of the point!
