I just had someone tell me Mohammad is the most popular name in the UK. Thank God it isn’t Noah, I said! People are so unbelievably thick they think this statement means something. It’s like getting upset there are lots of Koreans called Lee. Cultural name choices lead to reduced variety. If anyone ever says this to you, point out there are only three non-Christian names in the top 65 names in the UK. All three are spellings of Muhammad. That means that we aren’t being outnumbered by Muslims - Muslims just don’t have a lot of variety of names. Sick of racist, ignorant twats.
I hear that. Had to stop myself pulling a St George's flag off the window of white land rover parked outside the allotments this afternoon. Until quite recently I'd have assumed the owner was just expressing his innocent love of his country, and maybe he was. I don't know what to think half the time tbh.
Save R Kids sprayed on the pub mum and dad spend all day in, while the kids are off doing God knows what without supervision, probably.
My problem will be keeping my mouth shut, especially if we end up in a country with a Reform government. I imagine the punishment for accosting racist abuse against your own family* might be a bit harsh. Pretty sure we will be told to grin and bear it, or else. *Assuming it will probably become quite common place to anyone with a mixed race, non-white or white 'but with a funny accent' family.
So true. Its very been popular for a long time, first making the top 100 list way back in 1924. (sound like some kinda Name-DJ!) But as of 2022 they've counted the numerous spellings of Mohmmad as one, it's lifted Mo into top spot. "In 2024, there were 9,467 babies named Muhammad, Mohammed, or Mohammad born in England and Wales" All it proves is Muslims still like giving their kids traditional names, in contrast to the increasing disparate choices non-Muslims make.
I won't be keeping my mouth shut, but I will be choosing my words carefully. A Reform government is not inevitable yet btw, even if it sometimes feels that way. But if it happens, those of us who deplore racism need to stand up and be counted.
I have said it before, but I just feel we are sleepwalking into a reform Govt. Trump normalised bad behaviour, and now Farage & co are. It will soon be expected to get abuse if you are slightly off white or have a weird surname. As you all probably know I have an English first name, but my surname isn't. Had a long convo last year with someone who kept saying what is your real name as that is just your English first name. He just wasn't having it. I've mentioned it before that Mrs No7 doesn't see it, but I see looks and sneers at me and it isn't me being paranoid. I'm used to it, but it is there and getting more obvious.
Not so much sleepwalking as careening at this stage. Overt racism is definitely rising rapidly it is clearly being normalised, mainly online but we are now seeing it very quickly seep into public spaces. I try not to pan everyone with concerns about immigration, because some of it in fairness is a reasonable concern. Hotel use isn't sustainable and there needs to be an appropriate method for processing asylum claims applied. (Half responding to the point I think Libby made about being too quick to label everybody a racist). But there are racists among their number using it as an excuse and they are being strengthened by the increasing validation of their views by a grifting Reform Party, pathetic and dying Conservative Party and a weak and indecisive Labour Party who are seemingly unable to seperate legitimate concerns from intimidation and racist behaviour and as such have just stood aside hoping the heat leaves the situation whilst they try to fix the Hotel situation (which in my one defence of them is not their creation and it will take time to solve it properly). They need to be more aggressive in rooting out racist behaviour. Unfortunately I think it is naive to think that this is going to stop if/when the Hotels and crossings are sorted, these people are emboldened now and will swiftly move onto the next thing until they are stopped, possibly by force or not at all. What happened today in Lordshill is a clear sign of the increasingly emboldened far-right and it does exist, we can't just wave that away. As much as I am loathe to say it, I think the only thing that can defeat Reform at the moment is a revived Conservative Party managing to chip some points off of Reform and split the right wing vote enough for someone else to win or a coalition to form. That is if the Tories don't merge with them. On the positive, plenty can change in 3 and a half years, even if we can't see it right now. Reform may be peaking too early though, their ideal scenario might actually turn out to be right now and not down the line, like what happened to the Canadian Conservatives and Australian Liberals (neither of whom were anywhere near as dangerous as Reform).
Hands up here . Pretty sure I’m not ignorant . 100% certain I’m NOT racist . I honestly didn’t realise there was more than one spelling of Mohammad .Yes I did say to my wife it was the most popular boys name in the UK , and it did surprise me . Honestly pleased I learned the fact about more than one spelling of the name .
Ignorance is not innocence. Those ignorant fools who support Farage and his gang of thugs will be culpable when he ****s the country up should Reform form the next Government.
The most important thing is most muslim boys are called Mohammed. If most Christian boys were called Peter the number would dwarf the Mohammeds. The issue is taking the mode and applying it as if it was the mean.
I think the only sure way to stop Farage winning any general election is by changing the voting system to PR. I don’t have the confidence in Starmer to turn the country around because he is too busy chasing corporate support rather than improving the lot of the working class quickly enough. The Trade Union Congress starts today, I believe, and the second biggest union affiliated to the Labour Party (Unite) would vote to de-affiliate if given that chance to vote tomorrow, according to the union leader. Still a long way to go but the door to the new party is opening up with 25% of Labour Voters polled saying they would consider switching and that’s before the new party creates a manifesto. A lot of current Labour MPs are also talking to the new party so there could be a major shift in the not too distant future. A socialist manifesto would, in my opinion, attract a lot more people to the party. Interesting to see that Andy Burnham’s name is being mentioned more frequently as being brought back to lead Labour. He would certainly resonate more with the working class than Starmer does.
Today in my household it was a heated debate for pizza near rialto or pasta near per st marco.... pizza won
