"As usual football seems to operate outside the Law of the Land. Every incorporated body declares, each year, that it is a going concern or not, financially. What else is needed? This covers the sustainability issue. Maybe a team-wide salary cap would be beneficial.
Maybe an abolition of transfer fees, they are, after all, merely compensation for breach of contract with no real basis of calculation.
The much-touted Independent Regulator will have no effect as the Govt (any Govt) receives so much revenue in VAT, PAYE etc it is not going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
A proper licensing system, a la France, is required. Submit your accounts for the last season and forecast for the upcoming one by a certain date - if all is good then "continuez", if not then down you go."
 
How would it work without a transfer fee? Would you be stuck with an inferior player on a 5 year contract? Or could you just rip up the contract and kick him out? Could, therefore, Isak just say 'so long, suckers' to Newcastle and off to Liverpool?

There is some rule or other allowing him to buy himself out of his contract they brought in a few years ago. Can’t be arsed googling it and getting the details.

If football is to be treated like any other industry then clubs should be able to run at whatever loss they like surely. If regulation so far hasn’t helped then more regulation probably won’t.

First question would have to be 'why have you given an inferior player a 5 year contract?' ...

.. but contracts can also have protective performance clauses as well as probation ones ... also early termination, subject to conditions / events ...
