I know not everyone likes Adli but I think he's quality. He really impressed me during their invincible season. Last season was just very stop start for him though.

Five frontline centre halves - a position that doesn’t tend to get rotated - is one too many. If one was a kid that’s a bit more palatable. Otherwise, it’s dead money.

He’s missed a lot of football with serious injuries. Not “ injury prone” type issues but big injuries. His 94 Bundesliga appearances average out at 46 minutes per game. His player profile is great for us but 25-30m for someone that averages out at playing half a season in minutes over the last few doesn’t seem great value to me.

Think it depends on O9s injury, if it's really bad and there's massive concerns we can't go for 4 CBs if he's included in that 4. Ballard has had loads of injury issues as well. I'm not saying we will but just a feeling I have is we will go for Lucumi and also a young RCB

It’s a position that gets a lot of injuries. Last season we used O’Nien, Ballard, Hjelde, Mepham, Alese, Anderson and briefly Seelt. In the previous play off season about 8 players were used there. 5 is the minimum we need, it wouldn’t massively surprise me to have six.

This is always true. No player can be forced to leave.

But no club now will want a player running down his contract, and if the player chooses to do this, then he will fall way down the list of priorities for that club .

In short, he will barely, if ever play.

I can't think of a worse move for Dan. If he had a couple of big, "set up" contracts behind him, and was thirty or so, I could see it .

But, by choice, he is on a low value contract, and his value will fall if he doesn't play. There are always other players coming through or making a noise. Players can get semi forgotten. This is without factoring in the chance of injury.

Up to the Dan, who I like a lot. I hope is thinking for himself. But he has been a player a long time now and he should get himself set up, and loitering on an old, low deal will emphatically not do that.

Perhaps we missed the D’s out for new contracts and have skipped to T’s.

I think if Lucimi comes in they think he can work as the right centre half. I would be frankly amazed if our two most expensive centre halves were brought in to directly compete with each other. Also I expect that at least one of Seelt, Hjelde and Alese to still be with us come September.

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Trai Hume has signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light.

Ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season, the Northern Ireland international has committed his future to Wearside until 2030.

Hume moved to the North East in 2022 and was immediately part of the squad that earned promotion to the EFL Championship, which is where he made his mark.

The 23-year-old has made 123 appearances in the competition across three seasons, which culminated in an iconic day at Wembley Stadium in May, as Sunderland returned to the top tier following an eight-year absence.

After committing his future to the Club, Hume said: “The Club has shown faith in me with this new contract in the Premier League, which is where I want to be. I arrived at Sunderland in League One and I just wanted to play football – I wasn’t thinking about promotions or the Premier League, but this is a massive Club and that means there is always going to be opportunities. It’s been a quick rise through the divisions, and I’ve loved every second of it, so I’m happy to extend my stay and keep making memories.”

The defender started his career with Ballymena United before progressing through the ranks at Linfield and making his senior debut in April 2019.

Following a loan return to Ballymena, Hume established himself within Linfield’s starting XI, which led to a move to Sunderland in January 2022.

He made three senior appearances as the Black Cats secured a return to the second tier and later became an integral part of the Club’s promotion to the Premier League.

International recognition deservedly followed, and the Northern Ireland international has earned 19 caps to date, whilst also captaining his country last season.

Kristjaan Speakman said: “Trai’s story at Sunderland not only demonstrates the opportunities at our Club, but also what can happen when you take them. He arrived with the ambition of establishing himself in our team, and he is now a Premier League player, which is a testament to his application and dedication. He played an integral role throughout our time in the Championship, including our promotion last season, and his passion for Sunderland is clear every time he steps on the field. We are delighted he has committed his future to the Club and are excited to see him take this next step with us.”
