Go to France every year, at least once.

Going back there this summer but, having summered in Spain the last two, not sure I'm as mad keen as usual.

Down the Atlantic coast regions again, Poitou Charentes and Aquitaine, which are splendid so think we'll get by.

Was in Portugal last week, cheap, friendly and superb food and wine.

The beer though, is a ****ing pain.

Both Sagres and Super Bock give me mad ingestion and I suffered. Could barely face food half the time, it had to have some moistness to it, and I even lost weight.

Which is good going on a piss up type week.

Not a big drinker but I thought the wine in Porto was pleasant enough and cheap. Tried port but couldn’t get into it.

I agree, you didn't see much else other than those two and they're not great.

Mrs loved the photos I sent her from Norway last year, told her I'd take her one day, so she's only gone and booked a cruise up there leaves Saturday. Think I'll probably go stir crazy but we'll see. Only fair I suppose the number of times she let's me off the leash to do my thing. Do know a couple of the ports its calling in and they're nice places so that's a bonus.

I did that last year. Wont be an all day thing but a number of the places has some nice hikes. Olden was a particular nice one going up on the cable car and hiking up in the mountains and flam railway to the top and biking down

Olden is one place were going, she wants to see the glacier boulder there. I've got to do some research yet on the other stops see what walks are available, daughter's coming too so they won't be long distance, unless I can get a pass out. May be taking the piss there though.

Seem to remember you were there the same time as me last year, I think we missed each other by a day at one of your stops

Enjoy your trip

Fair play to her, she's booked me a deluxe drink package, fine wines and top of the range spirits , cocktails too but that will be no good unless they do an Old Fashioned, not on their list but a quick chat and a note to the barman, you never know.

In Crete for a few days in a place called Rethymno if anyone knows it. Obviously made no plans whatsoever if anyone knows anywhere good to go. She wants to do an olive oil farm tour the stupid beautiful bitch so we’ll probably be doing that. Nobody is by the pool as of 8:30 which is a good sign.

I was in Crete a couple of years ago, it is beautiful. Don't really know Rethymno, but if you're into your hiking, there are some stunning gorges to hike. The one I did was called Samaria Gorge, it was brutally hot, but you start at the top hike to the bottom and then you can catch a boat to the next town and a bus home or back to your car.

Also if you can, get up into the mountains and check out the local Tavernas. They are loads cheaper than the tourist places and it's all top quality home cooked traditional greek fodder. There's also tons of beaches to check out, and you can usually find some pretty secluded coves so no need to sit in amongst fat lobster coloured Germans wearing speedos two sizes too small for them.

Car hire is pretty cheap, and the bus network is also cheap and brilliant.

Heading there in September. I’ve stayed in Chania before, which is a short bus ride away and went into Rethymno a couple of times. I found the old town OK and had a couple of decent meals in fish restaurants around the harbour.

Chania was where I went too. Crete is pretty user friendly, there was a Lidl about 1/2 mile walk from where I was. But then just a few miles inland there are stunning walks up here.
